This is a synonym of "arcane," my first choice for today's word, but I decided I liked the sound of this better. I've been choosing words lately that immediately spark an idea for a possible narrative, and this did it for me. I can imagine this concept being used in some type of fantasy, secret-circle type of story. I also like that this can be used in much more mundane scenarios. For example, anime or even Wattpad can be considered esoteric, because they're still fairly "underground," and not well understood by people not in the "community."
