I've seen in some of my favorite authors that this word can be used to describe a person, in meaning that they have become hard after a troublesome past. It seemed to represent being closed-off, guarded, or even depressed. I'm not sure that this would be the correct definition for the use of this word, but it's the only one Google offered, and anyhow, this one seems pretty cool.
