Part Two of Recorded Interview

Date: Thursday, October 6, 2017

Duration: 47 Minutes

Location: Frederick County Sheriff's Office

No. of Pages: 20

Conducted by Officer Brown

Jade Carter: What do you mean, they didn't know who he was? He goes to that hiking group every Saturday morning! He...he wears hiking boots! He even has one of those packs you can drink the water straight out of. He comes back sweaty, with dirt on him.

Officer Daniel Brown: Our working theory at the moment, is that Connor has been using the hours that he tells you he is with the hiking group to work on his plan for Anna. If we're lucky, what this could mean is that the place he is hiding her is within a relatively close radius. We think it's possible he could have been working on the hideout to get it ready during that time. What would be helpful for us is if you could tell as much as you can about Connor's Saturday mornings. Did he ever mention anything unusual, or was anything ever even slightly out of routine. Did he come home late any week, or did he smell different? Did he bring more equipment than usual? Any little detail could help us.

Jade Carter: I....I really don't remember. I assumed he was hiking so I just didn't think about it too much.

Officer Daniel Brown: Did you ever go for a hike with him? Not as part of the group but in general.

Jade Carter: Yes. All the time, we both love hiking.

Officer Daniel Brown: And did he seem to be in shape for the hikes? At a level that someone hiking every week would be?

Jade Carter: Well he goes to the gym every day at lunch. So even if he wasn't hiking every Saturday, he was still in shape. So yeah, everything seemed normal to me.

Officer Daniel Brown: Okay, what is the shortest window you remember him being gone for. The earliest he ever came home for example.

Jade Carter: There was one weekend where he came home around...maybe 11:30. He had to because we had a lunch we had to go to for a retirement celebration of one of my coworkers. I asked him not to go at all that week, but he said he would just leave early.

Officer Daniel Brown: And do you remember when that was?

Jade Carter: It must have been...maybe May? I'm not exactly sure. I remember Louise retired near the end of the school year, because Connor was finished with the robotics competition, so he wasn't all stressed about that. Normally right before competitions, and by right before I mean like a month or even two in advance, he gets very tense, trying to make sure everything will be done in time.

Officer Daniel Brown: Did he ever come back from hiking on Saturday's much later than usual?

Jade Carter: Well...they did, or I guess...Connor said that they did an overnight hiking trip one weekend. It was relatively recently, and it was all weekend long. Maybe like...sometime in August? He left Friday after work and came back late Sunday night.

Officer Daniel Brown: Interesting. It would be great if you could try to check for exact dates on any of this when you get home, I don't know if you have a calendar or-

Jade Carter: I have a calendar, I can let you know.

Officer Daniel Brown: Excellent. And did Connor ever completely skip a weekend hiking?

Jade Carter: Not that I remember.

Officer Daniel Brown: Thank you. Now, you said that Connor worked from home a lot, about how many hours a week did he work from home?

Jade Carter: I'm not exactly sure. Maybe 20?

Officer Daniel Brown: And do you know if his laptop is at your home anywhere? His work laptop.

Jade Carter: I haven't seen it, but I also haven't looked...

Officer Daniel Brown: Okay. Did he typically go into the office everyday, or only some days?

Jade Carter: He went into the office everyday Monday-Thursday. Friday's he would telework, and then he would also telework a few hours each afternoon, or each night.

Officer Daniel Brown: And he never expressed any interest to you in teleworking full time?

Jade Carter: No, he actually said that would be boring.

Officer Daniel Brown: Okay. Well, prior to Connor's disappearance, he requested off Wednesday October 5th through Friday October 7th.

Jade Carter: Why would he request off if he knew he wasn't coming back?

Officer Daniel Brown: Well we wondered the same thing. He actually requested for full time telework to begin on Monday, October 10th.

Jade Carter: Full time telework? But...that doesn't make any sense.

Officer Daniel Brown: When we heard that he had requested full time telework from his employer, we hoped he might be planning to continue working. We hoped that when he logged into his computer, we could track it.

Jade Carter: Hoped?

Officer Daniel Brown: As it turns out, he's already logged into his computer. He submitted some work late last night. And he has recoded his computer to be completely untraceable. We won't be able to find him through it.

Jade Carter: But...that doesn't make any sense? Why would he continue to work?

Officer Daniel Brown: Well, we wondered the same thing.

Jade Carter: But...he can't possibly be getting the money from it can he? Wouldn't you be able to trace that?

Officer Daniel Brown: Exactly. We would definitely be able to trace the money he was being paid by his work.

Jade Carter: So...why don't you just do that?

Officer Daniel Brown: Well, we have traced it actually.

Jade Carter: Where is it going?

Officer Daniel Brown: It's all going to you, Jade. To your personal bank account.
