Today is to raise awareness of rabies,

a very serious viral infection,

it is caught when bitten by an infected animal,

treatment is effective with early detection.

Animals with rabies can spread it to humans,

through a bite, scratch, lick to broken skin or eye,

the disease then attacks the central nervous system,

without quick medical help, you may die.

World Rabies Day is held on September 28th, the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur who along with colleagues helped develop the first rabies vaccine. Today is to help raise awareness of the impact this disease can have on our society and measures that can be taken to stop it spreading. An excellent way to help control rabies is to vaccinate pets including dogs and cats and educating people of animals who may be infected with this disease, these include raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes. Rabies kills more than 55,000 people each year with most of these being in Asia or Africa.
