Today is to raise the awareness of literacy,

and concerns about standards worldwide,

millions lack the minimum literacy skills,

so more help we have to provide.

Literacy skills help improve knowledge,

help to gain employment, aid communication,

they also help to eradicate poverty,

more people need a proper education.

It was 50 years ago in 1966 that UNESCO officially proclaimed September 8th International Literacy Day. This is now celebrated worldwide and it helps to bring together governments, communities, teachers and learners. Some 775 million adults lack minimum literacy skills of which two thirds are women, they do not know how to read or write. It is also estimated that up to 115 million children do not have access to education.
