Chapter 11

Lucas had tried talking to Megan so many times that day but Zach hadn't let him succeed in his objective. What had happened to Zach? He was such a sweetheart when it came to girls and hadn't ever hurt any one of them as much as he wanted to hurt Megan. He couldn't understand why it was affecting him this badly either. He had hurt numerous girls in the past and had never felt as bad seeing them cry as he did at the mere thought of Megan's tears.

"Luke? Luke!" Lucas heard Zach calling out his name even before he saw him.

"Zach" he calmly replied although he knew what was about to happen.

"Who the fuck are you to go and tell her what I am going to do? Maybe I was right. Maybe you do like her and that's why you tried to make me back off but guess what, I am not leaving. I am not backing out of this just because of your crazy obsession with her. She already likes me and I will get her and win from you for once"

"It's not a competition to me, Zach. Do what you want to but I want to tell her because in the end it's not just about both of you. Sex is never just about two people. A lot of people can get affected by the consequences" Lucas said remembering the last time sex had caused disasters in his life and Zach snorted.

"Shut up with your 'oh-so-important' lectures. I am done. I am done with you. I used to look upto you because I wanted you to trust me the way I did you but now I want to stay away from you. You are crazy in the head if you want to help a girl over helping me"

"I just wanted to do what was right" Lucas said realizing that Zach was right. This was none of his business and he shouldn't have been trying to help a girl he barely knew.

"Well, then stop trying. No one gives a fuck about you. The guys steer clear from you because they think you are insane after that crazy fight you had with Aaron two years ago and the girls just want you for a quick fuck. You know how pathetic that is that I am the closest you have to a friend? Do you realize how pathetic you are?" Zach screamed and Lucas felt his stomach drop.

"I get it Zach. You don't need to spell it out for me" Lucas managed without breaking his voice.

"No, I do. You need to hear this. You need to know that no one cares about you, not the students, not the teachers and definitely not your father"

"Stop it. That's enough. You don't know anything about him. Juat because you saw him pulling a crazy argument with me freshman year doesn't mean that you know my equation with him" Lucas yelled.

"I don't care about knowing that either. I used to but not anymore. You chose a girl you claim to loathe over me? Just tell me one more thing, you were so anti-Megan since the start. What changed that? Why did you suddenly take up the role of her knight in shining armor?"

"You don't want to listen to me anymore so you have lost the right to ask me questions as well" Lucas said and Zach snorted. Lucas had never seen Zach so furious and irked.

He wanted to stop Zach and talk some sense into him but he didn't. Not when Zach packed an overnight bag to get away from him for sometime, not when Zach looked at him in the eye and shook his head in disappointment at their failed friendship and certainly not when Zach finally left.

Lucas had evaded Zach's question but he himself wanted to know why he was trying so hard to protect Megan.

Megan got ready to go to her work shift and was excited since Zach had said he would drop by and Aaron had hinted towards the same. She had never expected that Aaron could be that sweet but he was. The flowers that sat on her table were the proof of that. She also remembered the way his voice had changed when he talked to her. She didn't realize that she had started smiling thinking about him.

At work she shared her shift with Dominic and they joked around all throughout their shift and he was able to make her almost forget that Zach hadn't come to visit. Almost.

An hour before closing, the bell jingled.

"Welcome to Joe's. What can I get you?" Megan recited the greeting without looking up at the customer. Dom was in the back of the shop, cleaning up.

"What would you recommend?" the familiar voice asked.

Megan looked up and saw Aaron's blue eyes twinkle. She blushed under his gaze and squirmed.

"Everything is great. I personally like frappe with a chocolate topping"

"And I personally like your choice so I will order a frappe with chocolate topping" he said and his gaze travelled down along her body touching every inch of skin covered or uncovered by clothes. Megan blushed under his gaze again.

"I will just get your order" Megan stuttered and Aaron chuckled.

Megan went to prepare the coffee and Aaron took a seat.

"What is he doing here?" Dom asked Megan.

"He is my friend. He came for coffee"

"He is the guy from yesterday, the one you shouted at. Remember?"

"He apologized, Dom. Don't worry" Megan said and rolled her eyes.

"Come, I will introduce you" Megan told Dom once she had the coffee in a tray and dragged a reluctant Dom to Aaron's table.

Aaron looked up and scowled looking at the guy with Megan. He hated how they were standing so close and looked so comfortable in each other's spaces. He stood up in greeting to Megan.

"Aaron, this is Dominic" she introduced them and placed Aaron's coffee on the table.

Both guys shook hands stiffly and nodded at each other.

"Come sit with me, Meg" Aaron invited her to his table and Dom went back to the counter hesitantly.

Aaron and Megan talked until the closing time and then he dropped her at her dorm. Dominic had given her a sad smile when she left because it was his thing to drop her home after their shared shifts. Megan had apologized to him profusely and he had dismissed her.

At night she lay in bed thinking about Aaron. Zach had broken his word. He never came to meet her like had said he would and she had waited for him like an idiot. She also forgot about the missed calls on her phone the previous day and went to bed with an unsettled heart with too many things on her mind.
