As we got to the party, it was evident that there were a lot of wealthy people around, Nate's Mustang Shelby Cobra looked right at home with the land rovers pulling up, and the porches. Nate had helped me out of the car, onto the sky scraper heals that I had crammed my feet into. He led me up the steps and into the building, where the party was in full swing
"pretty big party" Nate said to me, I smiled and agreed, clutching Rita's gift to me as I scanned for her. My eyes found her, stood with Mark, surrounded by people, having a conversation that Rita only looked half interested in. I made my way over, taking Nate with me, and plastering a bigger smile on my face
"Crimson!" she smiled happily at me, and pulled me in for a hug "I'm so glad you came" I smiled
"well you said it wasn't optional" I joked, and the whole crowd laughed along, causing both me and Nate to look around puzzled but shrug and turn our attention back to Rita "I got you this, I didn't know if you would like it though" I held out the small bag to her, causing her to light up, and put her champagne flute down
"ooh you didn't have to get me a gift, no one else has" I looked around, and shrugged
"it's the least I could do after you got me these shoes" I pulled my dress to the side, revealing the shoes that she had bought me. Rita grinned, and pulled her own dress up, revealing a similar pair for us to see. Sticking my foot out I chuckled
"matchies" and she laughed some more dropping her dress, and opening the bag to find a pair of silver earrings and a dragon broach, both bejeweled of course
"oh I love them!" she gushed, as she looked at them closer, then pulled me in for a quick hug, which I returned stiffly. I moved to step back, as my father came in through the door with the lady from before in tow. I huffed and stepped back,
"anyway, I'll let you get back to your err" I clanked around the circle, choosing my words carefully "interesting conversation" I snorted and stepped back again, as she scowled playfully at me chuckling I turned to leave, before my father could see me, but Mark caught my hand
"may I have this dance?" A live band were playing, 'At last' I smiled and looked over to Nate who shrugged. Rita said
"Don't worry, I can keep him company for a while," I chuckled
"oh no, that's what I was worried about!" to which Rita Grinned wolfishly and I was pulled to the dance floor, and into Marks arms so be swirled around the dance floor. We danced through another song; I didn't realize how much I liked to dance, until I saw a flash of a camera that snapped me out of my bliss.
"Scarlett, I need you to do a photo shoot to put up on the site," I frowned not understanding "why do you need pictures of me?" I asked
"it's part of your portfolio, every fighter has one" I shook my head
"I don't want to" he nodded once, but said
"I'm sorry Scarlett, but you're going to have to."
"But I'm retiring soon, why do I need to be photographed"
"they don't know that, and if the annual pictures aren't up, people will ask questions. Now I'm sorry, but that's the way it has to be" there was a tone of finality to his tone, so I gave up arguing. Mark lead me to the side, and deposited me back with Nate, Rita grinned
"here she is, my favorite little street fighter" Nate looked at me questioningly,
"oh, I haven't told you, your stats have dropped you to number 4, since the break, you must have been injured at your last fights" I shrugged and nodded, not really bothered, I had 2 broken ribs, and I wasn't really feeling it." I knew I shouldn't have spoken as soon as I did, I felt Nate tense up beside me
"Scarlett what fights?" I turned to him, and didn't know what to say, he had let me keep talking and had barely said a single word since he got here. I had forgotten he was here, and now here I was stuck between my unwitting coach, and the ring leaders of underground fighting
"oh, yes this is our former third ranked fighter, I'll tell you what, she may be all pretty hear, but put her in the ring, and she is brutal, she broke a man's leg a few months ago" Nate's face went white. He let go of my arm and just walked away, and all I could see was the disappointed look on his face
"Nate, Nate" I shouted over the crowd, and began to follow him. He whirled on me, causing me to stumble, but not fall.
"Scarlett, you fucking know how dangerous those things are, I didn't teach you how to fight, so that you could go and walk into the ring, are you so fucking naïve that you think that you can just leave when you are ready, how the fuck are you going to get out of it, Scarlett, it's not worth the money you are winning, what happens when you lose your life" by this point Nate was shouting, but the whole crowd hadn't heard he had been walking towards me the whole time he was speaking, and was now so close I was walking backwards to avoid him "Scarlett what the fuck were you thinking, why the fuck would you do this, there are bad people there, why the fuck would you do this" I could see Nate's muscles flexing and tensing under his shirt, and I took more steps to avoid him, unable to speak. The tension was rising in my throat, and I could tell Nate was going to hit me. I knew it would be far worse than anything my dad could hand to me, but before I could panic even further, or before Nate could actually hit me, I felt, a fierce grip land on my shoulders.
