He was looking at her like she was the only thing that mattered and Happy loved it!
He stood next to the C block staircases and only she could see him. He was leaning against the wall and his lips formed a lazy smile. He was inviting her to come and how could she deny both of them that...?

"Uh... Guys I forgot to give Mrs Louw her file."- she lied.

Both her friends looked at her as though she'd gone crazy.

"Didn't you take time during register class to it take to her?"- Boitumelo asked.

She had, hadn't she? Okay, it wasn't over. She was a good liar and she wasn't really proud of it but it did come in handy. She pulled on her poker face and tried to calm her pulse.

"I didn't find her in her class. She probably had other obligations."- she said smoothly.
Her friends believed her after all they thought she had no reason to lie. She started packing her books.

"Okay I will see you during fourth period."

She wondered how long they'd keep their relationship a secret. She'd told Jay about during the weekend but he'd seemed preoccupied. She didn't want to question him. Whatever was eating him up inside he'd cough up when he wanted her to see it. She smiled as she made her way up the stairs. She'd had to take the long way in order to support her lie. Their secret relationship was nothing but magic although she wondered if they would ever have a normal relationship. One they could be proud to share with everyone. A part of her wanted this to work but she had to be realistic. Everything was coming together when she looked up and saw him leaning against the balcony. As if he sensed her presence he turned around.

A slow smiled formed on his lips. She'd seen it before. It was lazy and unpracticed. His eyes lit up turning a bright blue that she found mesmerizing. He looked younger and lighter to be around. Just looking at him made it all worth it. All the doubt fell away and the walls easily fell down. He was the center of her being and she didn't care if it was temporary or permanent. All she knew was what she felt now...

"I am glad to see I can still make you blush!"- Dylan said as Happy approached him.

"You are red yourself, honey!"- she quipped. She watched him turn red some more and found it cute. She had always found him attractive but he'd always seemed aloof. She'd even thought he was racist at some point.

"How was Accounting?"- he asked her.

"It was okay. My marks aren't as bad as I thought. Jay beat me though!"- she said flatly. She'd written her term test so badly. She knew she'd lost her number one spot and now Jay had. She wouldn't hear the end of it.

"I bet he couldn't stop rubbing it in your face."- Dylan said coldly. Happy heard the venom in his voice and didn't like it. She thought he'd moved on from his war with Jay.

"He didn't. He's always be number one so... He doesn't need to."

She raised her voice louder than she had intended. He frowned. She'd forgotten that her best friend and her boyfriend were basically enemies. Between the fight with "the-witch-that-shall-not-be-named" and she and Dylan reconciling she'd lost sight of reality.

"I'm sorry. I just get protective when it comes to Jay."- she told him, sincerely.

"I have noticed."-he said bitterly.

They'd have to talk about her friendship with him, it was inevitable. And why not now?

"We are friends. He's more like my brother than anything else."

He snorted.
Mocked her.

"If you are not gonna try to be civil with him the. I don't think our relationship is gonna work..."

It was the truth and she had to say it. Jay was her rock and it would take more than this to ruin her friendship. She liked, okay loved, but Jay... Was her everything.

"Okay I am sorry."- he said apologetically. "I forget that he is your friend sometimes."
They were sitting on the stairs now. Looking at him made her see how much he'd changed. He'd went from the boy who had chased her into the woods to someone who had her heart in their hands.

"Tell me about your family."- she blurted out. She'd realized that she didn't now the people around him.
He looked at her genuinely surprised at the command.
"Okay. My parents are white..."
Her eyebrows knitted together then she saw his amused expression and she laughed.
"Really??" She said as she took a look at him. "I couldn't have guessed."
"My father is a chartered accountant. My mother stays at home and takes care of the family. They have been together for 2o years now. I have a sister Jessica, who is ridiculously annoying..."

Happy rolled her eyes.

"But I love her and I have this fierce need to protect from everything."
Happy smiled, "I have noticed. And I admire you for that."
His eyebrow shot up. "Really??"
"Yes really. Why are you surprised?"- Happy asked.
"I don't know. Maybe it's because you are always defending Jay..."
"I defend him from your racist side. I love that you are protective of your sister but I won't let you judge Jay based on the colour of his skin. That isn't fair."

He clenched his jaw and Happy knew he disagreed.

"I am not racist!"- he bit out. "How can I be racist when I am dating a black girl...?"

It shocked her to the core. Was she a means to an end for him? She stood up and in front of him. He took the challenge and stretched out to his full height. She looked up at him.

"Are you with me to make a point?"
"What? No, of course not."- he said through clenched teeth. "I didn't mean..."
"I know after the steam room incident a lot of people started asking a lot of questions."
"What are you talking about?"- Dylan asked. Clearly confused but Happy wasn't buying it.
"The article in Vaal Newspaper insinuated that there might be racism in the school. And that the school's rugby team might be the main perpetrators."- her voice wasn't stable. She could feel her emotions getting the better of her.
" I didn't even see the damn article!"- he growled. His beautiful blue eyes suddenly becoming dark.

"Maybe you are trying to throw them off... Show them what they want to see, a rainbow nation."- she laughed coldly. "Hell, dating a black can't be all that bad can it!"

He looked at her. And all the while all she could think of is how stupid she had become in a matter of seconds. She'd pushed it. She could see it now. His eyes were dark, jaw clenched, hands balled into fists on each side. She didn't understand where this sudden hysteria came from.

"Dylan..."- she started.

"Don't!"- he cut her off viciously. "I am not the one that has issues here, you are. I have tried my utmost best to prove to you that my intentions are good. But you still think I have some other sordid reason for being with you."

He picked up his bag from the floor.

"I can't keep on doing this with you. The only reason I want to be with you, Happy, is  because I like you. And as long as you can't believe that; we can't be together."

She watched him walk away. She wanted to say something but nothing came out. She knew exactly what the problem was but she couldn't say it to him. She couldn't tell him that she was afraid that he'd break her heart like her father did her mother's heart. She couldn't tell him that she was scared of what the world would say once their relationship became exclusive. She couldn't tell him that she loved him and that terrified her....
