He'd just dropped Jessica off and needed
to see if Happy had made it home alright. He didn't trust Jay as far as he could throw him but he cared about Happy. As he was driving toward the township, he has no qualms about his decision. He entered the township. There was no sign welcoming you in but he knew. The only time that he ever heard of Sharpeville was in grade 9 history. It has always been a sore topic and an awkward lecture that was had in a multi-racial class. He was following Happy's location. She's dropped it a few minutes ago to prove she'd arrived home. As he drove into her street he saw Jay's car outside what he presumed was her house. It was small house with a bright yellow wall and a black and gold gate. He was about to run get out of his car when he saw her on the roof of her house with Jay. Their eyes meet and they held warning. That's when he saw it, the ice pack that Jay had on her back. Had she been beaten? Dylan felt himself fuming. He barely heard his phone and ring. He picked it up and it was Happy.

"Drive past her house and turn left at the end of her street there'll be a huge rock right in front of a house. Park there." That wasn't happy. It was Jay. Despite what he felt, he did what he said. And as he pulled parked next to the rock, he remembered Happy's face and he wanted to punch something. He saw Jay pull up behind him and he walked got out of his car. His anger was in his stance and he silently demanded an explanation. They were in what looked like the Main Street. This one , unlike Happy's street, had a tar road. People had already begun to stare.

"A white person in a township is quite a site. You're safe here, don't worry." Jay declared as he walked toward him.

"Why are you here and not Happy?" - he cut to the chase. He didn't need to small chatter. All he needed to know was that Keitumetse was okay.

"You know, if you're gonna be an official couple, you may need to say her actual name and not her..." he mimicked inverted commas "easy name!"

It took every fibre of his being not to punch him. "Her mom essentially grounded her. The only time you'll be seeing is at school." Jay informed Dylan, in a manner that Dylan thought was quite smug.

"If she's grounded, why are you there?" He growled out.

"Cause I'm grounded with her. My parents are out of town and I'm gonna be at her house for some time." Jay explained. Dylan could take it weird, small doses of information. He took a step further and was close enough to Jay to see the read mark on his face. He'd been hit and his guess was a slap.

"What happened when you got her home? You've got a mark on your face and a he's got an ice pack on her back." His initial anger has simmered and was replaced by concerned curiosity.

"Happy told her mother that she slept with you!" It was almost like the words were forced out of him.

"Me?" Was all that could come out.

"Well, not you specifically but a boy. She didn't take it well." He pointed to the mark on his cheek as he leaned back on the bonnet of his car. "Happy took the worst though. She won't be able to sleep on her back for a while.

"And you stood there and did nothing?!" He asked and his voice was laced with venom. Jay was the hero, wasn't he? Why didn't he step up and stop this absurdity. "Why didn't you stop her?" He asked again.

"Stop her mother from disciplining her?"
Jay asked as he laughed. Was he missing something?

"What Happy did was wrong and for that she was punished. I helped her through this madness and I got my due. Once my parents are notified, my dad will kill me."
He was very nonchalant about everything that had just been said however Dylan was still catching up. Happy was 18 years old. They'd used protection so what was the problem?

"She wasn't supposed to have sex with you or anyone! She let down her family."

Dylan felt his heart fall to his stomach. He knew that the ceremony was a big deal but this, he didn't expect this. "Is she okay?" He asked quietly.

"Believe it or not this isn't our first rodeo!" Jay laughed. "She's fine. A bit embarrassed and that's why I'm here but she'll heal and her mom will forget once she sees her raking in awards next week."

"Is there anything I can do?" There was a sense of defeat that he felt. Obviously there were situations that Jay would handle better than him due to experience and if there was one thing Dylan could do it was to do humble himself enough to learn.

"No, she said to tell you that—" he took a breath. "...she loves you. She sent me here cause if her mom had seen you she would have killed her."

"Thank you." Dylan turned to leave.

"My advice, she's embarrassed and she will be tempted to close up. Don't let her."

He got in his car and left Jay there. He felt weirdly numb. He wanted to hold her and he couldn't. He want to understand this and he didn't. It made him realise that life makes love harder. When he saw her at school on Monday nothing would have changed. He loved her now more than ever.
