Busy lives just get in the way
Distractions of late night talks
And open ended questions
Words left hanging in air
As sleep mists our eyes
The time we have to talk
Is much too limited
Limited to class and ten minutes
Those ten minutes after school
Soon will be taken away
By our busy lives
I don't need to see you everyday
Or hear your voice every night
I understand it's impossible
But I would like
To spend time with you
To be in your arms as we chat
Talking about nonsensical things
And tracing shapes on your arms
Learning the small things
Knowing how thunder affects you
Or what hair products you use
The little things, often overlooked
Those are the most special
I crave small kisses
On my cheeks, on my neck
Three second kisses on the lips
And cuddles soon after
I want to sit in silence and work
Just knowing your presence is there
Letting your arm occasionally bump mine
As your pencil does algebra
And mine sketches a scene
I want to know your mind
The dark places, the sad
But the happy and the good as well
I want you to understand me
And to know my ticklish spots
I want to get into tickle wars
Followed by heavy breathing
And kisses on the nose
But I also understand
That something like this doesn't last
Not with the reckless nature of youth
But I'd like to think
That we will respect each other
When it's all over and done
That we will not fall into a slump
And feel worthless as we are alone
But right now we have
The opportunity
To have those small kisses
And the lingering touch
I told you I didn't write love poems
But maybe I just didn't know how
Or possibly I told a lie
Used to cover the cracks I felt
Left by myself
And the ideals I held for love
