Chapter One: Being Forever Alone

"Hey Mabel, wait up!" I shout; struggling to catch up to my best friend's quick pace.

Mabel whipped her long, straight blond hair around as she turned to face me. Her light blue eyes narrowed in on mine, indicating she's in no mood to wait long. I rushed over to be by her side, flashing her a bright smile along the way. She rolled her eyes at me and turned to continue walking once I took my place beside her.

"Where are you headed?" I asked as we hurried down the long hall.

Mabel sighed with annoyance and rolled her eyes before giving me an answer. "Lance wants me to change," She mumbled lowly, but I still heard her.

"Why?" I asked; turning my head just enough to shoot her a look of confusion.

"Because he thinks my skirt's too short," She answered with a 'duh' tone to her voice.

I turned my head to her more and scanned her body. She had on a bright purple 'U' necked shirt, with a laced pink flowered skirt. It reached her mid thigh and I couldn't understand why he though it was too short. I wear stuff like that all the time and my brother doesn't even freak out on me when I do.

Mabel must of seen how I wasn't understanding it all, so she took another sigh before explaining it to me. "Roxie, when you find your mate, you'll understand completely. Lance is just worried other guys are going to look at me the wrong way if I wear this," She explained, pointing to her outfit and rolling her eyes again. "He can be possessive, but I still love him."

"You guys are too cute," I sang with a smile on my face, almost skipping now as we walked down the hall.

"What?! I just told you he wants me to change and he's possessive! Where's the cuteness in that?!" She half shouted at me.

I rolled my eyes at her, giggling to myself about her outburst on me. "He loves you!" I shouted, my voice echoing off the gold and red wallpaper. "He cares so much about you that he isn't going to take a chance on you getting away. Having a mate must be wonderful!" I exclaimed as I held my hands together against my chest and looked up to the ceiling with dreamy eyes.

Mabel couldn't help but burst into laughter at my response to her. "A mate is wonderful, but not all the time, and diffidently not the way you described it!" I could see tears forming in her eyes from the laughter she was expressing.

"Whatever, it's not like I'm ever going to get one," I sighed under my breath.

"Roxie," Mabel stopped walking down the hall and turned to face me, taking my arms in her hands. "Derrek will let you have a mate; he has to, it's fate. He's just being protective for the time being, that's all," She shrugged.

I wanted so badly to believe her, but I know nothing would change my big brothers mind, not even the Gods. "Mabel, think about it. Derrek doesn't even let me talk to guys- unless their mated and their mates are around. He also makes me go to an all girls school. I don't even have enough contact with a guy to meet my mate, let alone be allowed to be with them," I pouted to her and a look of sadness washed over her blue eyes.

Mabel dropped the subject, knowing everything I said is the truth and there's nothing I can do about it. We continued on our way down the halls and to her room in complete silence. The whole time I couldn't stop thinking about how unfair it is for me not to have love in my life.

My brother loves me; I know he does. Everything he does is always in my best interest, but would it kill him to give me some slack sometimes? Mom and Dad died when I was only seven in a car accident, so it's always been up to Derrek to take care of me and the pack since then. He had to take over when he was only 16 and it wasn't an easy thing to do- if I may say so myself. He's done a great job though, and 10 years later, this pack of wolves couldn't be doing any better!

"Roxie!" A girl's voice called for me from the end of the hall.

Mabel and I both spun around to see Cecille leaning against the staircase railing. I noticed her long red curls matched her red flowered sundress perfectly, while her light grey eyes went along with her silver sandals. Mabel and I shared a quick glance, before turning to see her headed our way.

"What's up Cecille?" I questioned with caution; not too sure if her visit's a friendly one or not.

"I have great news!" She sang, skipping down the halls- so I guess the visit's a friendly one.

"I'm going to get changed real quick; be right back," Mabel told me and I nodded for her to go.

Mabel turned back and headed down the hall to her room. I looked over at Cecille, who looked happy to see Mabel leaving before she could reach us. They don't get along much; if you haven't already guessed. Mabel's a sweet, shy girl, who doesn't like trouble. Her job in the pack to get information on everyone. Even though she's a computer geek who wears glasses when she reads, she's actually really pretty. Cecille on the other hand is a strong, fiery, fighter. She loves to start trouble and sometimes I like to be her sidekick when she does so.

"What's your news?" I asked her as soon as she got close enough to where I stood.

Cecille locked her arm in mine and started to drag me in the direction she just came. "I found him!" She screamed with joy, pulling me harder and faster.

"You found who?" I struggled to keep my balance and not fall flat on my face as she pulled me forward.

"My Mate!" Her voice chimed; and I had to say, this is the happiest I've ever seen her.

"What?!" I shouted, stopping her from pulling me and standing my ground.

Cecille struggled to gain control over me again, but it wouldn't work. I have Alpha blood in me, which means that I'm stronger, faster, and everything 'er' compared to her. She looked at me dumbfounded when I caused her to come to a halt after she had just told me she found her mate. My mouth dropped open in disbelief and I didn't know where to start on asking her questions.

"How? When? Where? WHO!" I yelled the last one at her, and maybe that was a little unfair.

It's not like I'm mad at her for finding her mate, but I'm not too thrilled about it either. Everyone gets a mate but me, so you can see where that puts me on edge. You should have seen when Mabel told me Lance was her mate; I almost destroyed the whole third floor of the pack house.

"His name's Travis," Her eyes lit up as the thoughts of him flooded her mind. "I went for a run and I accidentally, may have.... Steppedoverthetreatyline," Her last words were all jumbled together, but I could hear her loud and clear.

"YOU WHAT?!" I began to scream at her again. "Were you trying to get killed? To get out pack slaughtered?!"

"No, stop! Just listen," She pleaded and my temper dropped down a notch. "I stepped over the treaty line and I bumped into my mate. The only reason I went over is because something was calling to me; I could feel him near. Anyway, him and I are together now and I'm joining Black Moon's Pack next week!"

My mouth dropped again at her words. "You're leaving Nightfall Pack?" I whispered to her, not wanting it to be true.

"Yeah, but I'll still visit!" She smiled sheepishly at me, but I wasn't buying it.

"Cecille, have you told my brother yet?" Her face dropped and I could tell that was a no. "You have to tell him!"

"About that..." Her voiced trailed off momentarily while she gathered her thoughts again. "I was kind of hoping that you would talk to him for me," She dropped her eyes to the ground and she gave a worried smile in my direction.

"Cecille!" I whisper/shouted to her, so no unwanted listeners could hear. "My brother hates mates! How in the world do you expect me to talk some sense into him?!"

"I don't know, but please! Roxie, you have to help me," She begged; her grey eyes filled with sadness.

I sighed and shut my eyes before continuing. "Fine," I muttered under my breath. "But you owe me!" I pointed to her with a stern finger and she just laughed.

"Of course!" She smiled brightly, then went back to pulling me in what I now understand to be the direction of my brother's office.

I let her drag me down the hall and up some steps as we made our way to the top of the house and to my brother's office. I hope he isn't too hard on Cecille for finding her mate. He normally hates them, especially when they don't belong to the same pack. Last time this girl tried to join another's pack to be with her mate, my brother lost it! He let her go be with her mate, but he sure as hell lost it.

I just hope that when I ask him for Cecille, I'm not the one who gets killed.

Cecille stopped pulling on me when we came face to face with a dark wooded door. I turned to see Cecille urging me to open the door with her eyes. I took in a breath of air and sighed before lifting my fist to knock on the giant block of wood in front of me. It took some time, but after a minute of us standing there waiting, the door was pulled open hard.

"What," Derrek growled lowly, his grey eyes narrowing in on mine and Cecille's.

"Cecille wants to leave our pack and join another's to be with her mate," I stated plainly.

I figured I might as well just come out with it beings I don't have all day to stand around. Plus, I bet wasting time rather than getting to the chase would annoy my brother even further and probably ruin any possible chances of him being okay with all of this. Cecille didn't like my plan though, because the second my words came out, an elbow hit me in the stomach.

"Is this true?" He questioned Cecille with dagger eyes.

"Ye-yeah," She stuttered to get her words out correctly.

"Which pack?" He asked coldly.

I could tell Cecille was more than terrified of my brother, so I thought to step in and make it easier on her. "Black Moon pack," I answered for her blankly.

Derrek, for some reason, must have liked the sound of that. The second I informed him of the pack, a smirk danced it's way across his scruffy face. He ran a hand through his short brown wavy hair and his grey eyes lit up; that was all I needed to know he has a plan.

"What?" I asked him once I noticed his sudden change in attitude.

"Fine," He answered and my jaw dropped open in shock.

"Fine?!" I questioned, not expecting him to okay this so easily.

"Fine," He repeated for me. "I need to meet with their Alpha and this will give me perfect reason to," He added before smirking again to himself.

"Thank you Alpha!" Cecille smiled brightly and he gave an encouraging nod to her.

"You're welcome, just don't start any trouble over there, Cecille. I know how you can be at times," He smiled to her and messed up her perfect hair by rubbing a hand on her head.

Cecille was so happy that I honestly think she could care less what he does to her as long as she gets to be with her mate. I sighed again at the thought of everyone falling in love and having romantic lives and it seriously depressed me to the max. Derrek must have seen this on my face, so he ordered Cecille to leave us and for me to step into his office.

"What's this about, Derrek?" I questioned, taking a seat across from his paper filled mess of a desk.

"It's about you being upset with me," He answered, joining me in sitting down as he flopped onto his black leather rolling computer chair.

"I'm not upset with you," I lied and I knew he could see right through it; he always does.

"Sure you aren't," He rolled his eyes and smiled. "Roxie, I love you. You can talk to me whenever there's a problem; you know that... Right?"

I nodded my head to him and returned a smile, "Of course, big brother! Besides, I'm not really upset with you, I'd like to call it me being frustrated."

"Frustrated?" He questioned.

"Yeah, I mean I love how you protect me and all, but I really want to meet my mate." I bit my lip, like I always do when I'm nervous, as I waited for his response.

"Roxie," His voice was soft and apologetic. "We've talked about this, you're only seventeen."

"MABEL AND CECILLE ARE 17 TOO!" I shouted and quickly brought my hands up to my mouth to cover my mistake. "Sorry," I whispered to him through my hands with wide eyes.

Derrek nodded and put a hand up in understanding. "I get that, Roxie, but you're my little sister. You have no idea what it's like to get mixed up with a mate. They can be mean, possessive, rude, demanding and arrogant. Frankly, I don't want you getting involved in that at such a young age."

I didn't respond, it's always the same when I do; I say something stupid and Derrek makes me feel bad about it. Honestly, I don't know how much longer I can take this, he has more rules for me on this matter than any mate I've ever met has had on their females.

"I understand that, Derrek, but can I at the very least get to talk to guys?" I asked with sad eyes.

Derrek's face grew hard. "I do let you talk to guys," He answered, more than annoyed by my comment.

"Guys without mates." I corrected.

There was a long silence before anyone dared to talk. Derrek glared at me and I glared straight back without a care on his reaction. As far as I'm concerned this has gone too far for too long; I want a normal life and I just want to be allowed to talk to a guy! Is that seriously going to kill me?

"Fine," He answered slowly, never breaking eye contact.

"Fine?!" What kind of mood is he in today?!

"Fine, I'll give you a chance, ONE chance." He held up a finger and I couldn't help but jump out of my seat and run over to him for a hug.

"Thank you so much Derrek!" I sang as I squeezed him tight.

"Don't thank me just yet," He warned and I pulled away to show him how confused he's making me. "Your chance is to sit in on a meeting," He answered lowly.

I smiled even brighter by this. I could care less how I talk to the guy! As long as he lets me into a room with someone who isn't mated, that's better than anything I could ever wish for.

"Roxie," He called, snapping me out of my thoughts. "You can come to my meeting with the Black Moon pack."

"Thank you so much!" I pulled him back in for a hug and he chuckled in my ear.

"No problem, little sis. But remember this; I'll kill any guy that lays a finger on you," He hissed and I couldn't help but laugh.

He's going to let me in a room with males who don't have mates! I can finally say that I've at least talked to a man!

Maybe I won't be forever alone.
