"Who's that? That's not my mama's name," Anya whispered. She then looked at Mr. Forger, her eyes remaining curious, "Who are you mister?"
Mr. Forger's eyes widened at the realization that his daughter had forgotten him as well. He quickly cleared his throat before offering Anya a small smile.
"My name is Loid, Loid Forger. It's very nice to meet you, what's your name?" he asked. Anya thought for a moment, before replying softly.
"Ania,"
"What a wonderful name! Let me introduce you to some of my friends. This is Damian, he goes to school with you," Mr. Forger said pointing to me. I stood still not knowing what to do. My heart was beating too fast, I could hear it in my ears.
Mr. Forger then pointed to Franky, "This is Franky, he's a good friend of mine," Franky smiled and waved.
Mr. Forger then moved his hand towards Dr. Wetson "And this is-"
"My friend! Mr. Peanuts!" Anya yelled as she looked at Dr. Wetson's eyes widened, how did Anya remember him and not us?
"Ah, Ania, it's good to see you... how-w do you feel?" Dr. Wetson asked as he walked closer to her. Anya's eyes glimmered in relief as if recognizing him made her feel secure.
"My head hurts, do you have peanuts for me today?" Anya asked. Dr. Wetson shook his head as he thought of his words carefully.
"Not today... but I can see you're tired, I'll tell you this, if you accompany my friends and I to a special place, I can bring you not just one, but two bags of peanuts! How does that sound Ania?" Anya nodded excitedly as she began standing up. Her legs wobbled, and in a matter of seconds she fell unconscious in my arms again.
"She's okay, her body is just exhausted, we need to take her to the nearest hospital," Dr. Wetson said.
"Why can't she remember us? But she someone remembers you?" I ask worriedly. Dr. Wetson took off his glasses as he began rubbing his temples.
"Anya recognized me from our time in the lab, she didn't recognize her adoptive parents, which means she still thinks her biological parents are still alive... It seems Anya has forgotten everyone and everything past the age of 4," Dr. Wetson concluded. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Anya forgot us?
"For now, we need to take her to the hospital to make sure she's physically stable," Mr. Forger said firmly, his voice steady despite the turmoil brewing inside him. "Once she's safe, we can start figuring out how to help her regain her memories."
Franky stepped forward, concern etched across his face. "I'll arrange for transportation to the nearest hospital. We need to move quickly."
As we made our way to the vehicle, Anya remained unconscious in my arms, her small frame feeling more fragile than ever. I couldn't shake the fear gnawing at me—what if she never remembered us? What if she never remembered me?
The drive to the hospital was tense and silent, each of us lost in our own thoughts. Mr. Forger kept glancing back at Anya, his usually composed demeanor showing cracks of worry. Franky drove with uncharacteristic focus, his usual banter replaced by a grim determination.
When we arrived, the hospital staff sprang into action, whisking Anya away for immediate examination. We were left waiting in a sterile, brightly lit room, the tension almost unbearable. After what felt like an eternity, Mr. Forger emerged, looking exhausted but relieved. "She's stable. She's going to need some time to rest, and they'll run some more tests to understand the extent of her memory loss."
Franky sighed, sinking into a chair. "I don't understand how this could have happened, can we just show her pictures or something?"
Dr. Wetson shook his head, as he began folding his hands on his lap, " Unfortunately, if we stress her too much with information, it might backfire and cause her to retreat further into her confusion," he explained. "We need to approach this delicately and give her time to process everything at her own pace."
