CHAPTER 40 - Hang On

"You are acting like a fucking lunatic Sage! We care about you! We-"
"-STOP CARING ABOUT ME!" I get in the car and slam the door shut.

"SAGE!" Luke hits against the window.

I start the car and push the gear into drive. I look past Luke and see both Liam and Shane rushing towards us. I slam on the accelerator.

"SAGE!" Luke's voice fading behind me.

"I can't do this anymore!" I scream as my cries flood the car! Everything on the road in front of me is blurry. I push on the accelerator as hard as I can.

"What is wrong with you Sage!" I yell while hitting the steering wheel repeatedly.

A sudden jerk, ripping me back to reality I see myself heading straight towards a tree next to a small bridge. I grab onto the steering wheel and yank it back with force.

"Oh dear... What did you do?"
"He tried to strangle me Nik, I don't know what happened! I just grabbed onto anything I could find to get him off me! I didn't know it was a knife!" I pace up and down and fall into Nikolai feeling my lungs battling to take in enough air.

"Shh, hey hey! Look at me!" He lifts my face up towards him, seeking my eyes.
"It's okay... we will sort it out."

"I have to call the police-"
"-No! You will do no such thing."

"But I killed him, Nik! I have to go to the police!"
"Sage Baby, shh... if you call the cops you will be locked up."

"But it was an accident."
"Still murder. Let me help you. I'll take care of all of this and all you have to do is continue as if nothing happened."

"What? No! I... I can't do that!"
"Yes, yes you can! For me. Do it for me."

"But Nik."
"I can't lose you, Sage. I will not lose you. Besides, you will not survive prison. Especially being a cop killer."

"What do you mean?"
"Cop killers get heavy sentencing. And you are way too important to be rotting in a cell."

"Nik..."
"Trust me. You will be fine."

He leans down and kisses me softly. We part slowly.

"And besides, if his family finds out that it was you... that will crush them. You don't want that, do you?"

I shake my head from side to side and taste my tears rolling down my lip.

"So now what?"
"Well, go pack. We'll leave this place. Will give you time to adjust."

I nod my head and hurry off to my room. I take out my suitcase and start shoving clothes in.

Unable to control my crying, I stand and place both hands on top of my head.

"How did this happen?" I take a deep breath and hear my cries flood the room.

"Will she be okay?"

I hear a voice but can't open my eyes.

"She has sustained serious injuries to her head and neck. We have induced her into a medical coma for now and have scheduled more tests and scans and will update as soon as we have a more indepth look."

"But she is going to be okay?"

"For now she is stable. We can take one day at a time and see from there. I am sorry I can't give you a straight answer right now, but we are doing everything in our power, but nothing is certain."

"But you said she is stable."

"Yes she is, but we are not out of the woods yet. Why don't you go take a shower and get some rest. We will call you as soon as there are any developments."

"Thanks Doctor, but I would like to stay right here, in case she wakes up."

"She won't because of the induced coma but, I'll give you some time and come by in about an hour. Can I send in the others?"

"No... they do not get to see her. Not now. Not until I say they can."

"Very well... I'll see you later then Mr. Moretti."

"Just Luke."

I hear footsteps fade and soon followed by something warm wrapping around my hand.

I hear his breath forcefully fall from his lungs.
"Fuck..."

I hear him fill his lungs again followed by a long deep sigh.

"You better hang on Sage! You hear me! Please, you have to hang on!"
