"Scrumptious isn't it?" He takes another bite of his waffle.
"I had better," I say, running my fork across the waffle.
He pauses while staring at me and slowly places his hands down on either side of his plate, holding onto his knife and fork.
"That's not nice... how must Maria feel hearing that?"
Not paying any attention to him, I continue pushing the waffle around.
My heart sits in my throat at the sudden sound of his fist hitting the table sending cutlery and glasses rippling. I look up and see anger in his eyes.
"It is rude playing with your food. Now eat!" He demands and carries on cutting a bite-size piece.
"Tell me why you lied about Devan?"
He takes a deep breath and drops his knife and fork on the plate.
"And that is how you ruin an appetite. Very well." He clears his throat and wipes his mouth with a serviette.
"Let's get one thing straight. I do not lie. I don't see the point in it. Secondly I don't think I feel like explaining any more details to you. You are being a spoiled brat! I open my house to you, let you sleep in my bed, give you my food and you don't even have the decency to say thank you? You sit there accusing me of lying!" His eyes borrow deep through mine.
He takes a deep breath and push his plate to the side.
"But- Oh thank you Darla, please give my thanks to Maria, it was magnificent!" He takes a sip of his orange juice and then places it down on the table.
"But seeing that I am a reasonable man, I will still tell you all the juicy details. So, you know the part where you stabbed him. In the neck of all places... I guess you didn't think straight seeing as he was busy squeezing the life out of you.
Anyway, there I am, seeing him on your kitchen floor, you crying your eyes out telling me you made a mistake and he wanted to hurt you blah-blah-blah. All a big mess actually. I came to your rescue. I mean how couldn't I? But like everything in this world, nothing is for free and that is how our deal started. You lure the dirtbags who crossed me and I well - kill them."
I shake my head side to side slowly while wiping the tears away.
"Oh darling... don't cry... you were really good at your job, so good I even gave you an allowance! After I did you a solid, I still paid you... I mean who does that? That's right. I do." He shakes his head while his tone of voice sounds higher.
"I just don't understand why on the night of your accident you attacked me? After everything I have done for you. Do you have any idea how much that hurt? All the questions left unanswered. You and your police buddies almost got me though, when they said you were dead. Had a funeral and all. I even shed a tear for you. Can you believe it? Me, crying?" He pauses and stares deep into my eyes.
"Anyway, getting off track here-"
"-How did you find me?"
"Now that is my little secret." He winks and finishes his orange juice.
"And my freedom?"
"Mm, ah yes. Well you see, Shane - pain in my arse; was getting too much regarding his brother and that put a lot of unnecessary police attention on me and thus affecting my trade and that cost me money. So you see how that became a problem for me? I knew though if he found out it was you who killed his brother he would probably find some way to cover it up and that will still leave me with the same problem. But, by you confessing to the cops, will finally set you free from all the guilt and well the rest is self-explanatory."
"So you want me to go to the cops and tell them it was me?"
"Yes! That is exactly what I want you to do." He sits back in the chair with a big smile flashing over his mouth.
