CHAPTER 34 - For A Reason

"Yeah Luke, not like he will freely tell her. Might be best that she knows." Axel says.
"I know what?"

Luke rubs his hand over his hair and takes a deep breath.
"Meg broke his heart." He takes another deep breath.
"Oh..." I take a seat at the bottom of the stairs. "... How?"

"Well..." He walks towards me and leans against the wall. "She cheated."
"Cheated?"
"Oh yeah... walked in on her and a guy at Rêve."
"Rêve!?" I gasp.

Luke nods his head slowly while keeping eye contact.
"That explains-"
"-a lot hey..."

I take a few moments trying to gather my thoughts.

Liam, actually cared for someone....

"Didn't see him as a lovey-dovey type though."
"He wasn't always like this hard heartless arse. He cared for Meg very much and she basically ripped his chest open and tore his heart out. But since you came into the picture-"

"-no! He is still a hard heartless arse, I will not be guilt-tripped."

"Hm-mm. Whatever you say." Luke scoffs and walks towards the front door.

"I am serious Luke. What happened between Liam and I... not going to happen again. Where are you going?"

"Like I said Sage. Whatever you say." He pulls his keys from his pocket. "Let's go, dinner isn't going to fetch itself." He opens the door and stands aside while the rest of the guys walk out.

"Look... I have seen Liam at his best and at his worst. But I have never seen him like the way he is with you. Yes I wasn't fond of the idea with you two but he is my brother Sage and I only want what is best for him. And of course I care for you and want what is best for you too."

"Luke-"
"-Whatever you decide to do... just don't hurt him. I know you have some unresolved things with that Shane guy. And Liam is not the type to compete but I am not sure what he will or won't do when it comes to you. Just... Just be sure before you make this something more."

"You don't have to worry... Like I told you both. I don't want anything more other than friendship. And for Shane... he is in my past and that is where he will stay. Let me grab my wallet." I turn around and walk towards my handbag on the kitchen counter.

No Liam, no Shane... no complications.

I hurry and close the door behind me and make my way down the few steps, towards the car.

Agh Shit!

"Are you okay!?"

I gather myself and feel my leg throbbing. I rub it a few times and see Luke down on his hind legs holding my foot up.

"Always a cluts." I slowly get up with his help and take my bag from him.

"Here." Luke hands me a couple of my things that fell from my bag and I see the envelope Mrs. Jones gave me a couple of weeks ago.

"Oh yeah! I completely forgot about this."
I take the envelope and start opening it.

"Who is that from?"
"I don't know. Mrs Jones said a man left it by my doorstep. This was a couple of weeks ago though." I peek inside and see a picture. I take it out and feel my soul leave my body. I drop the picture and feel my tears stream down my cheeks.

"Sage..."
"It's Nikolai isn't it! Why would he send me a picture of Sarah like this!?"

"Sage-"
"-She is dead and it's all my fault!" I grab onto Luke and feel his arms surround me.

"Shh... it's okay."
"It's not!" I shriek.

His hand wraps around my chin and lifts my head seeking my eyes.
"Sage... he knows where you are."
