Start from the beginning

"No it's fine, I get to sit in the back with Rose, she's my new bestie now." Erin winks at us and gently close's the car door again.

"Is she now? I've been replaced." Again, I wait until Erin is done sorting her bags out and buckled in before I even start the car. I watch as Rose and Erin have a little fun together for a few more seconds before finally taking off.

"Music?" Rose asks, and as requested per miss Rose, I let Scarlett play her playlist and the beginning of the drive is just the four of us singing Disney songs. We keep going until we're out of New York City and Rose has enough.

"So miss Rose, I heard you started school this week. How was it?" Rose shrugs, not really looking at Erin but at the landscapes passing before her eyes. I hear a little 'meh' but nothing more. "Just meh? You know, school is where I met my bestest friend."

That seems to catch Rose's attention. "Really?"

"Yeah, that's where I met Lita. And now we're stuck together." And I can't do anything as Erin starts telling her embarrassing stories about me. Laughter fills the car, especially Scarlett's and Rose's as Erin makes fun of me.

"I knew having Rose and Erin together was a bad idea." I huff making Scar cackle. I hear some plastic wrapping being opened, and I just know Erin got candy. "Look at her, already giving her candy."

Scarlett chuckles, "She's even worse than you when it comes to telling her no."

"Are you talking about me?" Erin's voice suddenly pops up, interrupting our conversation. I simply shake my head with a small laugh. "You know what? My new best friend and I are gonna watch a movie together." I'm assuming she's getting Rose's iPad out, so they can watch one of the movies Scarlett downloaded on there. Add to that Rose's happy squeals and cheer, we have two happy girls in the back seats. She also get out headphones and a headphone jack splitter out of her bag, I swear this woman thinks of everything.

"Yay! Can we watch Mulan?" Erin connects everything to the tablet, before handing Rose her headphones. And once the movie starts, it's dead silent in the back.

For the next hour and a half, Scarlett and I discuss. The conversation flows easily between us, like always I want to say. When the movie finishes, Erin unplugs everything and unfortunately for Rose, her iPad needs to charge in order for to keep using it has the battery ran out. We try to offer her other toys and games like I spy but nothing works and in the end, she just ends with nothing.

"I'm bored now. I'm bored. Mama I'm bored." Rose whines, adding to everyone's frustration, especially Scarlett's. The atmosphere in the car is now very different from the one at the beginning of our trip. Then, she asks, "Are we there yet?"

"No, no yet sweetheart. We have..." Scarlett leans over to check my phone that I am using as a GPS to answer her question. "We have three and a half hours left."

"That's too long..." Rose says as she apparently begins to kick Scarlett's seat.

"Hey, no kicking mama's seat." But she continues, "Rose what did I say?" Scarlett says, raising her voice slightly. Rose sighs and sulks into her seat, clearly done. "Why don't you have a nap? It'll go by faster!" Her mother suggests.

"Not tired though." Rose mumbles. The car is silent for a good two minutes before Rose's voice cuts through the tension again. "Mama? Bathroom."

I take a glance at Scarlett, whose head is leaning against the window, eyes closed as she pinches the bi=ridge of her nose whilst taking a dep breath. She looks a bit overwhelmed and I can't blame her.

"Why don't we take a small break at the next rest spot, huh? We could use a small break from the car." I suggest. Thankfully the next one isn't too far ahead.
