LITA

"HEY, ARE YOU BUSY RIGHT NOW?" I can hear Scarlett's voice through the phone, with a sigh as if she was tired and stressed. Before I can even answer, I hear Rose's sobs through the phone as well.

Oh.

"No, what's up?"

"Rose, she... I don't know what to do. She's a bit upset about tomorrow, and she won't calm down. I didn't know how to call, my mother is busy, and you were the only person I felt comfortable calli– Outch." She cuts herself off and the rest comes out muffled, but I can still make out a few things.  "Rose, honey please, we don't throw things I know you're upset, but we don't do that little miss." She sighs, and I stay silent, giving her a moment. "I'm sorry Lita."

"Hey, it's okay. Don't worry, I don't mind at all. How can I help?"

"Could you... Could you come over? Please." She asks desperately. Without needing to be told twice I start to gather my things and get up to grab a pair of sandals.

"Sure, give me half an hour." I tell her while putting a light cardigan over my tank top. I hear her hum as I stuff my keys in my pocket after locking out the front door. "Okay bye Scar." I run down the stairs, I probably should't have done that in sandals but oh well.

Outside, the air is still warm as the sun starts to set. The small, cool breeze helping with the heat. People are flooding the streets, enjoying the last bits of their summer vacations before they have to go back to school or work, the parks are crowded with kids still running around and adults having picnics on the grass.

I make my way to Scarlett's as quickly as humanly possible, dodging everyone in the way. I get there later than I would've liked and shot Scarlett a quick text, a minute later, she came down holding an agitated Rose in her arms. Without waiting a second, she shoved the young girl into my arms before resting her forehead against my arm and taking a big breath.

Well, that's worse than I thought.

"Come on, let's go." I grab Scarlett's hand, and we get into the building. She doesn't say anything, but watches as I try to get Rose to calm down and look at me. Eventually, she stops crying, and her sobs turn into sniffles as she looks around confused. "There she is. Hi Rosie."

Rose didn't say anything and just dropped her head on my other shoulder, hiding away from the world. She takes deep breaths to calm herself down, it doesn't seem to really work, but we just need to be patient.

"Rose can you say 'hi' please?"

"Hi." She mumbles against my shoulder. Just as the elevator's doors open, Scarlett pushes herself up and untangles herself from me. She walks in front of me and Rose with the keys and holds the door open for us to walk in.

I immediately sit down on the couch and pull Rose on my lap, so she can be comfortable. I keep an arm around her while the other brushes through her hair and dries her wet cheeks. "What's going on flower? Why are you so upset?"

"School." She shares quietly. "I don't wanna go."

"And why is that?"

"I don't wanna." She whines. She looks s if she was about to get all worked up again

"You don't wanna leave mama?" I ask, trying to get somewhere. When I receive a nod, I quietly cheer. "Oh sweet girl... It's all gonna be okay. Rosie, I can promise you it's gonna be so much fun! You're gonna make some friends, you're gonna draw and sing and play and then mama will pick you up before lunch, and you'll spend the rest of the day together! Doesn't that sound like so much fun?" I try to convince her, but she doesn't seem convinced, and I'm running out of ideas. "I know it's hard and scary, you're feeling all these big feelings, and you don't know how to do and that's perfectly okay. You know, Julie goes to school and loves it! She has friends, and they play together, and she learnt some cool songs. Her teacher is really nice, and I'm sure yours will be as well."
