It's quiet for a long time. The silence between you and Ghost isn't uncomfortable, but you want to talk with him, to get your mind off being in this freaky room. You haven't had a long conversation with him yet, only small exchanges every now and then, and you don't know where to start.
"What's the weather like in England?" It feels like a stupid question, one you ask on a date that's not really going that well, but it's something.
"The weather?"
"Mhm."
"Grey and rainy."
"Do you like it there?"
"It's alright. Haven't been back in a while."
You talk about a little bit of everything. You learn that he's from Manchester, but that doesn't tell you much, you have no idea where that is. Then you end up talking about food and you feel your stomach growling, making you acutely aware of how hungry and thirsty you are.
"I used to work in a butcher shop, so I cook a lot of meat."
"Ah don't tempt me, I could kill for a steak right now." you say, shifting in your seat to try and get rid of the empty feeling in your stomach.
"When we get back, I'll cook you something." Ghost's voice is soothing. It gets raspier when he is quieter. You start to feel your head growing heavier with every sentence he speaks, and it's hard to pay attention to the way he's describing the different cuts of meat and how you can use them best. You feel yourself dozing off.
"Are you sleeping?" A slight pinch at the back of your hand wakes you up.
"Hmm." You are a little dazed.
"Just checking, You can go back to sleep."
You tilt your head backward, trying to get comfortable, and your head meets Ghost's shoulder. During the last couple of weeks you have learned that contrary to its muscly and dangerous appearance, his body is a very good pillow.
You wake up from the noise of the door unlocking and opening.
"Good morning." You feel annoyed just hearing Rubio's mocking voice talking. You can smell the smoke of a cigar, it reminds you of Price.
"I'll ask you one more time, nicely, where is he?"
Ghost doesn't answer.
"Well then." Rubio sounds determined.
You hear the sound of Rubio slapping Ghost and you flinch. You can feel your heart starting to beat faster. Then he punches Ghost, and by the sounds of him coughing after, you assume he was hit in the chest. Ghost takes your hands in his, squeezing them tightly. Then Rubio punches him over and over. He makes no sounds louder than a few grunts, but you feel his hands squeeze yours with every punch. You can't see what's happening but it doesn't sound good at all. It starts to sting behind your eyes as you grow more worried about what they are doing to him.
"Stop it!" you shout, trying to get them to quit hitting him for just a second if you can.
"Look who's feeling tough." you hear Rubio say. He doesn't hit Ghost again, instead, he walks over and stands in front of you, holding a cigar in one hand. He grabs your jaw with his other hand and forces you to look at him.
"You're lucky to be a woman." he says, blowing out thick cigar smoke straight at your face. You feel the smoke itch in your throat when you breathe in, and it makes you cough. "Because we don't hit women." Rubio places the cigar between his lips, then he pulls out a pocket knife from the breast pocket on his shirt. You feel scared, really not looking forward to another cut on your neck. He reaches over your head and grabs a hold of your hair, yanking it straight up. You hear the click as the knife is flicked out, then you feel your hair fall back down, ending right below your ears. Rubio holds up his fist in front of you, gripping a bundle of your hair.
