Maddy and Me

Chapter 38: Friday

Sonny walked downstairs in a black tank top, blue skinny jeans she never thought she'd wear after 6th grade, her dad's red-and-black flannel which was too big for her and a long black wig. Rebecca screamed, "Marceline!" with one a glance as her sister reached the end of the flight of stairs. Sonny entered the living room with jazz hands and a pure smile that showed off her plastic fangs.

Becca was jumping up and down in her generic vampire costume with a baroque red cape while their father made an observation, "Oh, the three of you are vampires together this year! That's cute. And which vampire are you, Sam?"

Sam got up from armrest beside his father in his costume of blinding pink, black and a little white. He looked up from his phone and said, "Draculaura."

"Who's that?"

"A cartoon character. You won't know."

"Why vampires?" asked Gina with a beer in her hand.

Sonny explained, "Maddy and I decided that we're going as Princess Bubblegum and Marceline from Adventure Time and Becca decided she wanted to do something visibly vampire-y since nobody recognized her as Bella Swan last year."

Becca interrupted, "Don't even remind me."

Everybody rolled their eyes at her dramatic flair. Teddy continued, "I'm going to a party with everyone, so I won't be able to go trick-or-treating with Becca this year. Sam volunteered to go instead with HeR hIgHnESs who said that he could only come if he dressed like a vampire."

Sam looked up and added, "And since Teddy backed out a week before Halloween, I had to make do with what I had."

"Hmm... Why the pink though?"

Sam was offended. "Mamma! Anyone can wear any color they want. Colors don't have gender."

"I meant neon pink doesn't suit you. I thought I put better clothes in my washing machine."

"Hey... Th-these are not mine!"

Rebecca sassily replied, "Shore Draculaura."

Sonny promptly stood between them and stretched her arms. "Guys, please don't get into a fight about who is a cooler vampire. I would rather put a stake through my heart."

The parents laughed. "Okay, okay," Gina said as Paul took his phone out, "Now pose together."

Just as Maddy, Kat, Rue, Jules, Cassie and Lexi were about to enter Daniel's house, from two houses away, Teddy put her head out the window and screamed out her girlfriend's name. Everybody looked at them both.

Teddy only saw Maddy and waved at her excitedly. Maddy laughed and waved back like royalty in her pink sequin halter neck top and pink layered miniskirt. The 'popular girls' waited near the door as 'the losers' got out of the car and made their way to them, belting the guitar riff of 'Back in Black' by AC/DC.

People eyed them weird and Maddy's best friends laughed at how stupid they looked and how arrogantly loud they were compared to the music that lead a riot inside the party house. Maddy could only smile with heart eyes at Teddy's air guitar performance.

They greeted each other on the lawn in a chorus of "hey!"s, it was a part of the plan for everyone to see the new couple outside. Jake held up a clinking black bag and said in singsong, "The drinks have arrived!"

Kat asked, "Why did you guys bring drinks? Don't you know Daniel already has them?" Teddy took to Maddy's side and rested her right hand on Maddy's waist. Maddy did the same.
