Most times, there are these small hedgehog beings called Shaymin. These small mammals are soft as flowers and smell like the dewdrops in the morning. They live in Gracidea Valley far beyond Japan wildlife.

The pink Gracidea flowers are grown there where the Shaymin are born thanks to Moxie's beauty. Some people plant Gracidea flowers in their garden when they grow and often give some to people on Valentine's day. Some people said that these small Shaymin are very shy around people.

Each season, Shaymin gathers with others in a flower field somewhere and migrates from there. This behavior is called Flower Carrying because a new field of flowers grows where it lands. Shaymin is also attracted to areas where there is a lot of gratitude. Its personality is almost opposite with each form: in Land Form, it is shy and easily scared, while in Sky Form, it is courageous and playful. If wet, it shakes itself to dry itself off, and exhibits the behavior of scratching itself with a hind leg like a dog. Since it camouflages by curling itself up into a ball, it can easily escape people's notice. It has been seen liking sweet food.

Shaymin's Land form looks similar to a hedgehog. Its body is pure white and on its back it has green grass, along with a pink Gracidea flower growing on either side of its head. It is also relatively small, being only 00'08" in height and 04.6 pounds, which means Shaymin's Land Forme is one of the smallest Yokai. Several Gracidea-like flowers also appear on its back whenever it feels comfortable, but when it senses an impending danger, it rapidly hides it back. Its legs are short and its underside is plump. They can curl up into a ball when humans come around.

Shaymin's Sky Form is almost completely different from its Land Form. In this form, Shaymin has a reindeer-like appearance (mixed with a bit of canine features) and it is also larger. Its legs are much longer and are now a green color. The green grass-like fur is now confined to its head and fashioned similar to a Mohawk. Its ears are now very long, appearing almost like antlers. On the back of its neck are red petals, resembling a scarf. Flowers grow on Shaymin's back when it is relaxed, but rapidly go back in when its relaxation is disturbed. This means when it is surprised or frightened, the flowers rapidly go back in.

Shaymin will change into Sky Form and back if it touches a Gracidea flower. It reverts to Land Form at night or if it is frozen. Shaymin can instantly purify any polluted area of all impurities in the air and transform it into a lush field of flowers. It takes in the polluted air, purifies it inside its body, breaks it down into water and light, and releases the purified substance in a violent, explosive burst. Its power varies based on the type of pollution absorbed.

Rudolf Moonlight was the first Nightmaren to find a lost Shaymin hiding in the nook of the willow tree. He tried everything to help the poor hedgehog but he knew how to lure the poor Yokai out. He took out some of the star puffs from his back to feed it, revealing that what Shaymins eat is like the soft food. With the small hedgehog calmed down, he scooped it right out of the nook.

He took it home to his star world home and began to raise it as his pet. He learned that the Gracidea flowers can turn the Shaymin into its Sky form, sensing that it can contact the flower's pollen. He named the Shaymin, Twilight, believing that she is half reindeer and half flower.

That was the day that Rudolf had his own companion. Little did he know that eight years ago, his younger sister Pavi had a companion of her own.
