I awoke and fully expected it to be the middle of the night, but no.. it was the morning.
Light streamed in through the curtains and I sat up. There wasnt any sneaking sounds or throwing pillow sounds.
Everything was silent, but I had a feeling something wasn't right.
I very quietly got out of bed and crept down the hallway to jamies room. I just had a feeling something was wrong.
I pushed the cracked open door a little more open so that I could poke my head in. And I'm so glad I did.
There was Jamie, sitting, curled up in ball, rocking themselves back and forth silently.
I immediately walked over and sat on the bed next to Jamie.
"Jamie?"
They peaked out from behind their knees, and then ducked back in. I could see the tears in their eyes.
I started rubbing small circles on their back.
"Dear what's happened?"
I asked, already guessing what had happened.
Jamie lowered their knees down, revealing another big wet spot.
"Ok, dear everything's gonna be ok, you get changed and ill strip the bed.
Then Jamie did something unexpected.
They scooched over and layed against me, in search of comfort. I nearly froze from shock but knew I needed to give that comfort.
I wrapped my arms around Jamie, giving a big hug. I heard them sniffle and I rubbed their back.
"You're ok, you're ok"
We stayed like that for minute, till jamies sniffles receeded. As they calmed down I asked.
"We're you wearing-"
I didn't even have to finish for Jamie to shamefully shake their head. I sighed.
"You're jeans haven't been washed yet, I'll grab them and your hoodie"
They nodded
"I'll be right back"
I gave Jamie a quick squeeze before I broke the hug and quickly went to grabbed the things and come back. I handed them off to Jamie and they wordlessly hopped off the bed to go get changed.
I repeated my stripping the bed routine and waited for Jamie to finish. Jamie did so and stepped out, walking straight over to me. Their jeans were worn and practically disintegrating around the knee while the t shirt they had on was missing most of its stitching. It sporadically appearing as if someone was just holding the shirt together
"We should really buy you some new clothes, shouldn't we?"
Jamie shrugged, I gave a small smile.
I then sat down on the bare mattress and patted the spot next to me.
"Now come on, let's talk about this, properly"
I'd given Jamie small talks on the nights But during the day not a word was spoken about the subject. Jamie didn't want to talk and I wouldn't push the subject. But today it was happening, we were going to talk.
Jamie frowned and looked down.
"There's nothing to talk about"
"There is Jamie, you have to talk to me here, what's been going on? Why aren't you wearing the-"
I tried to use a less embarrassing word
"-Protection"
Jamies frown just deepened. They took a deep breath.
"It's embarrassing... you know that"
"Uh huh"
I encouraged Jamie to keep going.
"And you... and tom-"
Jamie built back up their energy, growing towards their usual resolve
"You treat me like I can't do anything for myself, you treat me like a kid, like a baby."
They continued on
"And I dunno. If I'm not a baby, I shouldn't need something so babyish"
Downcast, they brought there knees up and leaned on them. I squeezed their shoulder.
"Dear that kind of protection doesn't make you babyish, not at all. You're the furthest thing from babyish"
I lied a little, knowing it was what Jamie needed to hear.
"But acting like you did last night isn't alright Jamie. And you need to actually wear the protection"
"I know"
Jamie mumbled.
"Jamie I'm not being harsh here, but I don't want to be washing sheets every day. Its in your best interest to wear them and I'd hope you do, but for the time being, ill be doing checks alright. Just to make sure"
"What do you mean by checks?"
"Every night before bed I'll check that your wearing the protection"
Jamie just stared at me for a moment before exclaiming.
"What?!"
"With the past few nights, I'm deeming it nessecary"
"And what if I just change after you check!"
Jamie retorted back to me with a cocky tone. I monotonely replied.
"I don't know, but I have bit more faith in you than that Jamie. Faith that you'll be a big and mature person about it, and if you weren't my dear, it'd be very telling"
Jamie stayed quiet, fiddling with their fingers.
"So what's up with calling me dear recently?"
Jamie switched the subject, I think in their special way of saying they wanted the conversation over. I could only hope they actually got the lesson.
I respected their special ways.
"Just cause, I dunno, you're like an actual deer... compared to me at least"
Jamie frowned, unimpressed. I reasoned further, aside from height.
"You're quick and cunning-"
I was really just coming up with traits off the top of my head, Jamie was loud, stubborn, confident, aggressive, with a size that didn't really match. Not really like a timid shy deer.
But it was just cute to call Jamie one
"You're headstrong, you're alert. You've even got those big doe eyes, like bambi"
"What's bambi?"
I gave them a bit of a confused look, but they remained dead-panned.
"A movie about a deer"
"Can we watch it?"
"Sure, I'll get some breakfast going"
As I stood Jamie piped up.
"I like bambi. Sounds nice"
I turned back to them
"Yeah?"
"And deers aren't babyish?"
"No, deers are very cool"
"So bambi isnt babyish"
I tried to not laugh, half chuckling.
"Not at all. Can call you bambi?"
Jamie hummed
"Yeah, it's ok"
I chuckled.
"Ok then bambi"
