There was a pretty big wet spot. I worked quickly and stripped the bed. Thankfully the mattress wasn't stained. I gathered up everything, figuring I might as well wash the duvet and pillow covers too, they needed some freshening up.
I dropped everything off in a basket in the laundry room downstairs and walked back up to my room. I lingered in the doorway for a moment, staring at the poor baby on my bed.
Jamie was sitting on the edge of the bed with their knees up to their chest, pulling at their hair.
I quietly walked over, keeping calm hoping it would help Jamie calm down. I sat down on the bed next to them. They stiffened, and neither of us moved for a second. Till I leaned forward and pulled away Jamie's knees from their face.
They looked so angry and frustrated, I brushed some hair from their eyes and laid my hand on their back, rubbing soothing circles.
"So what happened?"
Jamie looked at me for a split second then back down at the bed.
"Dunno, woke up and um.. bed was wet"
"Ok-
I urged them on.
"-We're you wearing a pullup?"
Jamie shot me a glare, unhappy at the word.
"Well what should I call it then?"
They shifted a bit, embarrassed
"I dunno, just not that"
I nodded and went on.
"So were you wearing it?"
Jamie shook their head, covering their face with their hands.
"Why? Are they too small or-"
Jamie cut me off, shoving my hand and getting annoyed again
"Cause I don't need it!"
"Alright alright, no need to shove"
Jamie growled and tried again. I stood, placing my hands on my hips.
"Hey, that's not on. Pushing ain't nice Jamie"
Jamie grumbled, not saying anything in particular. Looking down with a sad angry frown. I sighed, sitting back down next to them.
It was a gamble whether jamie would prefer me standing over them or crouching down. Cause both seemed to annoy them, I just had to go with what felt right in the moment.
Jamie looked like they were gonna cry. I tried to switch the conversation tone a little.
"So...why go downstairs, risk being seen?"
Jamie squirmed in place
"I was gonna get a glass of chocolate milk and pour it over the stain to hide it"
They said, swinging their feet and forth and not meeting me eyes.
"Ha, clever"
Jamie looked up at me to see my smirk. For a split second I saw a really, truly happy smile on their face, seeing the pride and thought they put into their little schemes acknowledged. When they suddenly looked down and the signature angry frown returned.
I started to rub their back.
"Hey hey hey, you're ok. There's nothing wrong"
"Everything's wrong"
"Well I disagree"
"Then you're wrong"
"Well that can't be right"
Jamie frowned at me, I sighed.
"Jamie i know you'd rather not get into this so we won't"
I squeezed their shoulder.
But, there is nothing wrong with a little... protection"
Jamie didn't respond but that was to be expected. They pawed at their eyes.
"You must be tired"
Jamie deliriously nodded, rubbing at their eyes more. I held back my awes and stood.
I pulled back the covers of my bed and guided Jamie under them. I tucked them in and rubbed their back through the covers. Till their breathing evened out
"I'll see you in the morning Jamie, sleep well"
I whispered, standing and slowly backing out. Just as I was about to shut the door behind me, Jamie piped up.
"Open, peas"
They mumbled from beneath the covers.
I smiled and left door open a crack.
"Night Jamie"
"Night Andi"
They always called me Andi when they were tired, it was adorable and I loved it.
