Jack looked at his phone again, feeling it buzz in his sweaty hands.

He hated picking it up. He didn't want to see her. He hated her.

"You ready, Kat?" Jack walked into his daughter's room, chuckling when he saw she was struggling with her shoes. "What are you doing?"

"Puttin' me shoes on", Kat mutters, stomping her Nike Air Max on.

"It's 'my'", Jack got on one knee, tying the laces of her shoes. "And please don't mess these up. They are very nice."

"Okay", Kat says, looking around. "I's excited to see Luca! And Mr. Davey! He always gives us ice cream. Did youse know that? And-"

Jack smiled as he tied his daughter's shoes and listened to her rambling. She was one of the best parts of his life and he never wanted to let her go. Which is why he doesn't want to see her.

Which is why he can't see her.

"Alright, squirt", Jack smiled, cutting her off. "I think you're ready. Ready for the plane?"

Kat smiled and jumped in her dad's arms. Jack smiled and adjusted her position, making sure she was comfortable and ready to fly.

"Here we go!" Jack jogged out of the room and laughed at his daughter's giggles. He stopped and slipped his shoes on at the door, placing Kat on the floor. "Alright. Let's go see Luca and Davey!"

Jack opened the door and froze.

"Hi, Francis", she said, smiling nervously. "It's good to see you again."

Davey got a weird, ominous text from his boyfriend, and if he knew anything about weird ominous text—he knew nothing about weird ominous texts. The Jacobs family has always been pretty direct.

Despite that, something was wrong. He never saw Jack's car and Kat in the driveway of his house. Then when he got that text, it confirmed everything.

So, Davey was at Jack's place standing in front of the door, waiting for his boyfriend to answer.

He knocked three times and stood worriedly, his arms crossed against his chest. But when he saw Jack in one piece—more or less—his demeanor relaxed, and he immediately hugged him.

"Hey", Davey says, releasing the hug. "Are you okay? You look really stressed out."

Jack nodded, trying his hardest not to cry. He can't; he's not allowed to. At least not in front of her. "Yeah, I's- I'm fine."

"Your accent came out", Davey muttered, looking at Jack's eyes for anything.

Jack sighed, glancing everywhere but his boyfriend's eyes. "She's here."

"Who?"

"Kat's mom."

Davey's eyes widened, and he hugged Jack once again. Jack's arms stayed limp at his sides, and Davey knew he really wanted to cry.

"Do you need anything?" Davey placed a hand in Jack's hair, trying his best to comfort him.

He's never really had to do this before. Jack was very good at convincing people he was okay, even when it was blatantly obvious that he wasn't. He never wanted people to help him when he was feeling down, so all Davey could really do was observe.

"I have to talk to her", Jack muttered in Davey's shoulder before raising his head up. There were tears threatening to spill from his eyes, but they never dared to fall. "Would you stay?"
