He messed up.

He made a mistake – a big one – with the one things that was perfect in his life, the only thing that made sense.

You.

You were his anchor in his hectic life; the voice of reason in his reckless moments, the arms of comfort in his tired nights and the reason for his smile even on the saddest days.

You were the best thing to happen to him.

And he let you go.

No, but he didn’t just let you go – he made you storm off with flaming cheeks and tears in your eyes, with nasty thoughts of him and bitter heartbreak.

Luke didn’t let you go gently; not like a gentle release from his arms for a bird who deserved to fly.

No, he made you leave; he made you want to leave, biting at his grip that caged you and making sure you left a trail of dust in your wake as a reminder of his loss.

He made a mistake.

He made you leave.

-

He didn’t mean to.

It was in the heat of the moment – perhaps a tipping point of a boiling pot of bitter emotions that he tried to put a lid on – but the words slipped out of his lips and they cut you like a knife.

I just think it’s stupid.

It’s not stupid, Luke – you know how much it means to me.

It was something that you loved – something that took up the already small margin of time he had with you – and he was tired of having you away, tired of having taking up your time that wasn’t him.

You loved him – but you also loved other things. Other people. Friends. Family.

Other things that made you happy, other things that made up who you were – it was something that you held close to you, and the fact that Luke would even try to take it away from you – knowing full well how much it meant to you – was enough to make your blood boil.

He let it slip, and it was too late to catch the words that fell from his clumsy lips.

I just think you spend too much time on it, that’s all.

He knew he had struck a chord when he saw your eyes narrow dangerously, eyebrows furrowed and fists starting to clench.

So I can’t spend time with things that make me happy, but you can gallivant about with your music and your friends all night long?

It’s my job –

I don’t care, Luke. It’s my happiness. Did you want me to be sitting at home all the time, waiting for you to call? Waiting for you to come home? Show up at the studio with some cookies and lunch? Give you backrubs when you’re tired and have my life centered around you?

I’m your boyfriend.

You let out a derisive laugh, voice dripping with bitter sarcasm.

So that automatically makes you the centre of my world? Is it my duty as your girlfriend to devote everything I have to you?

Stop twisting my words!

His words come out louder than he intends it to, and the sharp tones echo in the silence that ensues.
