Ch 20

-Luke's POV-

I was watcing TV and my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID. It was Jai. He said he was going to visit Ellie, but it had been hours and he was not home yet. I wanted to call him earlier, knew what happened to Ellie, why she didnt come to school. Now i was about to know.
"Hey." It was Ellie's voice.
"Hey, Ellie, how are you? Are you okay?"
"Luke....theres one thing that i need to tell you."
"Im listening."
"I had cancer."
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THIS? WAS THIS A FUCKING JOKE? SHE HAD CANCER? I hadnt even told her how i felt about her. FUCK!
"Luke, hello?"
"I....." fuck. i wanted to tell her. I couldnt conceal it any longer. Jai was proabably listening right now but who cared. I would apologize to Jai later. since now they were a couple i shouldnt have show my feelings.
"I like you."
"I like you too, Luke."
"No, i mean i like "like you"." 
"Oh.....i.......um...sorry."
"I just want you to know how i feel. You dont have to say sorry to me. I know you dont feel the same way. But just please tell me why you like the dumb one."
"He is not dumb."
"Really? you think so?"
"Hey, who are you talking about, fag?" Jai shouted over the phone.
"Tell Jai to shut the fuck up." she laughed a little. It was so good to hear her voice.
I needed an answer so i could live without regret. Like seriously, what was wrong with Ellie? I meant i was not trying to compete with Jai because it was totally wrong but I JUST NEEDED TO KNOW.
"He's funny."
"You think he's funny? Then what do you think of me?"
"I think you have a sense of humor. You are sarcastic and i find it funny too."
"Not funny enough for you to like me." I knew i was saying the things that i shouldnt have said but i didnt care because if i didnt say it now. I would never say it.
"Luke....."
"I know, i know. Im sorry, i just...ive always liked you." now she must have realized when i said i had a crush, it was her. She must have found ridiculous for setting me up with Mehgan. Mehgan was cool and we both loved taking photos but she was not Ellie.
"So...you are not coming back to school?"
"No."
I wanted to visit her but i didnt want to be the third wheel. What the fuck should i do? It would be weird if i went to her place myself.

Jai came home after half an hour. He looked plain. I had to tell what i say to Ellie even though he probably knew already.

-Jai's POV-

On my way home, I wanted to cry but i didnt. Because i shoudnt spend my time crying.  I should be grateful that I still had Ellie and she still wanted me.

I opened the door and saw Luke sit on the sofa waiting for me.
"I told Ellie that i like her. Sorry. I'm really sorry I-" Luke said.
"Uh huh." I said and took off my beanie. I walked to our room with my bag.
"So you are not mad?" I said as he followed behind me.
"Nothing else matters. Ellie is alive, thats all i care about." I took out my books from the bag. Luke looked at me, disbelieved.

"You know shes a keeper when she thinks you are not dumb." he said and slumped down in my bed.
"Okay, first, Im not...dumb. And second, She thinks i am funny." Yes, I wasnt the smartest person but Luke had to shut the fuck up.
"Then why did you get D on the English essay? I got B-."
"Then now you know its time for you to  fuck off and let me study alone." 
"All right, all right." he put his both hands up and walked out.

School without Ellie was boring. Even though i had my other friends but i just couldnt enjoy the things i used to like anymore. I used to like playing videos games but now i just went studying everyday. The first thing i did after school was visiting Ellie. If i had problems, she would teach me. I didnt want to bother her, but she said it was okay. She usually spent her time reading books. Her mom would bring us food. Luke would visit Ellie with me on weekends. He still had feelings for Ellie, i knew, because feelings just didnt go away that fast.
Her mom quit the job to take care of Ellie. Her parents seemed to get back together. If her condition was good, we would go downstairs and watched movies downstairs. Ellie wanted me to pick the movies from the shelf, but there were too many movies. I couldnt decide, so everytime i just chose randomly. One time we watched an old Christmas movie and she got emotional when the kids got their parents back together at the end of the movie. I told her it was okay to cry. She rested her head on my shoulder and sobbed. I found her cute when she cried over this little thing. I asked her what were the things she had always wanted to do but never had the guts to do it. She said she really wanted to go to a rock concert but she was not allowed to go because of her dad. Ellie said her favorite band was Good Charlotte and she really wanted to see their live concert before. I checked their tour dates on the Internet but they were not coming to Australia any soon.

We went upstairs after watching the movie. She stuck more photos of us on her wall. We basically took photos everyday, so now her wall was full of our photos. It was sad to look at these photos because i could easily see that Ellie had become thinner gradually.
I found some photos on her desk.
"Hey! You cant see that!" Ellie said and took away the photos.
"Whats that?"
"Photos when i was a kid."
"Can i see?"
"No, because you will laugh!"
"No, i wont."
"Really?"
"Really."
She handed me the photos and i laughed. She was so adorable.
"Hey, you lied! Give back my photos!"
"No, i havent seen all of them!" I hid the photos behind my back. She wanted to took them so i put the photos high above my head. She finally gave up.
"Stop laughing!" she said to me.
"See, theres frosting on your face." There was a photo of Ellie standing in front of a store called "Sprinkles" and the other photo of her on the beach.
"I was like two."
"Where was this taken?" I pointed to the photo of her playing sand.
"Santa Monica Beach. We used to go there often. We would go to the frozen yogout store near the beach and then headed down to the beach. I missed that frozen yogout store." she said.
"So you still miss everything in the USA?"
"Yeah, we would go there every winter because that was when it was summer in the States. And once i was in the States, i didnt want to go back to Australia. My parents had to drag me to the airport."
She continued telling me about the boardwalk near the Santa Monica Beach and there was the BOA Steak house. Her family would go there occasionally.

I had become a part of her family. Her dad and i would go play tennis every other weekend. Ellie was really happy to see we were bonding. When i came back from the club with her dad, four of us would sit down and have lunch like a family. Her mom still made the most delicious chocolate chunk cookies and sometimes Ellie would eat em. This afternoon, after having lunch, i discussed my surprise for Ellie with her parents. Actually two surprises. Her parents took her to her anuts house and told her to stay there for a week. Ellie was puzzled but she didnt ask much. I took Ellie's iPod when she was not aware. Luke came to help me with the surprises that i prepared for Ellie. We worked non-stop.
