Chapter 36

In the two short weeks leading up to the pogues departure, things were crazy, to say the least. They had a lot of things to do, with very little time to do them. The first order of business was making sure that Pope and Kie's parents believed that they were at their respective camps.

When it came to Kie, her parents were thrilled that she would voluntarily leave the island over the summer. They thought she would be kept out of all the trouble the pogues cause. Little did they know that when they dropped Kie off at the ferry--which they believed would take her to the mainland where she would meet someone from the 'camp'-- she swiftly turned around and hopped into JB's van that her friends were waiting for her in.

The Heywards were also pretty happy that Pope was going away. Mr. Heyward was hesitant about losing his best worker but Pope was able to convince him, by telling him that because of the 'extenuating circumstances' of last summer, that the camp offered to pay for the whole thing. Plus it didn't hurt that this 'camp' would help show Pope's 'commitment' for 'getting his life back on track' and look good on college applications. So, similarly to Kie, when his parents dropped him off at the small airport, he turned around and met up with his friends.

Those events happened two days before their departure date. The pogues knew they couldn't keep Kie and Pope's presence hidden for longer than that. The final order of business was getting Lydia's family's boat.

The sun was long gone from the sky, when Lydia and JJ began their plan. They snuck over to the garage the boat was in, and went to work guessing the code for the padlock.

"Any important numbers you can think of?" JJ asked Lydia

"Well it's not my birthday, so maybe my moms?" Lydia shrugged

They pulled the lock and it didn't open. But then it dawned on Lydia, she knew exactly what the code was. And her guess was confirmed when the padlock opened

"It's the day she died" JJ whispered softly to himself, ignoring the guilty feeling he had knowing that there was a chance that Katrina Sherman was alive.

"He always said that's the day his life went from tolerable to hell on earth" Lydia ignored the pang in her chest when she said that. She knew that after everything her father had done to her, that she should've resented him. And maybe she did, slightly, on the surface level, but deep down she could never hate Jacob for what he had done. It was his way of coping, even if it wasn't a good one

They swung open the door of the garage, revealing a boat similar to the Phantom, "And this little lady here is the SS Sunshine" Lydia made a grand gesture to the boat

"She's a beaut, the perfect match for the phantom" JJ sighed, patting the side of the boat lightly

"And I know for a fact that she runs because Jacob comes down here every month, on the 1st and starts it. Just to make sure it runs, I never really understood why, since I can't even remember the last time this boat left the garage but I guess it worked in our favor"

They quickly hooked the boat up to the van, and drove to the chateau. With the help of Pope and Kie, they put it in the water, beside the HMS and covered it. This was the last night that they would be spending in the OBX for who knows how long.

"What's the best way to kick off a new adventure, pogue style?" Lydia asked out loud

"The options are endless, depends on what you're in the mood for" JJ replied

And suddenly, there was a sense of deja vu in the air. Last summer, they were in the same spot, not realizing what they were getting themselves into with the Merchant. This summer, they were down a member and were still reeling from it, not to mention the fact that they were about to do the riskiest thing they had ever done

A/N

I know this is short but don't kill me

I didn't want to include them leaving Kildare yet, but we needed to establish the prep they did for it

So the next chapter will be their journey

And hopefully the chapters will start getting longer again

(also there's a slight chance that i'm gonna rewrite this chapter bc it's trash but for now, enjoy)
