How Dare You Give Me A Harsh Critique?

It seems most people on here don’t understand what critique means. So, let me open up my dictionary and give you a definition.

Critique: a detailed analysis and assessment of something, especially a literary, philosophical, or political theory. a critique of Marxist historicism.

Ah, critique. Good old critique. I’m learning about critique right now in uni, and it’s killing me. Never mind I have an essay that’s due in twenty four hours that I haven’t started ya –oh wait, where was I?

*Straightens my collar* Ah yes, critique.

It seems when many Wattpaders ask for a critique, they expect a response across the lines of “OMG! This is so amazing! It’s better than Harry Potter and Game of Thrones! Like, I’d buy it at the store! Everything’s so original. Ermagherd! It’s so perf.”

But, let’s face it. It’s not always the case. I would know this as a fact, and so would most people.

So, it’s quite infuriating when someone asks for a critique, receives one that points out the flaws in their work, and loses their shit. Big time.

I see it all the time on Wattpad.

There’s nothing better than casually checking out people’s profiles to see some pissed off, deranged, hormonal Wattpader screaming at the person for leaving a “harsh” critique on their story. And because I can’t mind my own business, I decide to go and look at the critique, and it goes a little bit like this:

You have a pretty decent plot going on, and I like the direction this story is going. I’d only suggest working on your spelling, your characterization, diction, dialogue…. Blah blah blah… because some things don’t make sense.

Well, that’s a pretty short handed version of the critique.

Some people need to realize that just because you asked for a critique doesn’t mean you’ll get a critique that praises your work. Get over it. It’s life. 99.9% of people who do critiques are just trying to help you get better. Don’t throw a dummy spit over it.

It’s often best to take a deep breath, give it a day or so, and read the critique again. You’ll see all the amazing advice given to you.

Oh, and when you receive a critique that you think is unfair and whatever, don’t say, “My work is better than yours anyway, and I have more fans than you.” Like, shut the fuck up and don’t become an arsehole.

Even if you happen to publish your book (some people and publishers just want to see the world burn), remember that there are some pretty amazing readers and literary experts out there in the universe, who will rip your book to shreds, and not give two shits about it.

Yeah, think hard about that. There is more to life than Wattpad. There are people out there who also read books, but are not members of Wattpad.

People who give critiques are just trying to help. They are giving you choc chip cookies, but you just happen to think it’s dog poop.

Is that a fantastic analogy or what?
