Events before Cadence engagement and wedding.

Lilly POV

I had just awakened when I realized that Ben was gone. I had asked him to stay but in it's place was a single red rose and a note.

Will be back shortly.

Ben

I couldn't help but smile as thinking that maybe he and I could work through our issues and possibly be together again.

I got out of bed and took a shower. The days events were exhausting. Me having a twin sister and finding out that my mother was not my real mother was just too overwhelming. I quickly dressed as the first sign of darkness reflected from the glass of the French doors.

I walked downstairs to the study to see everyone was gone. Lying on the table were the objects that Ben and Steve brought with them. I sat in the chair as the items laid still against the glass table. The diary that belonged to Carmen caught my attention. I picked it up and flipped through the pages. It seemed pretty long and detailed and I felt that I was invading her privacy. I placed the book back on the table and poured me a glass of wine.

I leaned back in the chair and closed my eyes. Did I really want to know what was in that diary? I got up and walked around. Would it give me the clues I needed to find my daughter and the reasoning behind my sister's fate?

I picked up the diary and went back upstairs. I laid back in the bed and took a sip of my wine. Whatever was in this book could be a game changer.

Carmen's Diary

(Will be told in Carmen's POV)

Summer 1939

It was a very hot summer as my sister, Rosa and I pulled over for gas. We were in Rosa's boyfriend's 1932 Ford Model B as Rosa and I were on our way to visit Grandma Verda. When we pulled over there was a gorgeous young guy and his friend. They looked like they had money and the tall one kept looking at me. I went to pay for for the gas but he stopped me.

"A pretty lady like you should not be pumping her own gas. You need a big strong man to do that for you," he said smiling. I couldn't help but laugh.

"What's your name little darling?" he asked starting the pump?

"Uhm, Carmen."

"Well Carmen my name is Malcolm. Who's that in your car?"

"Oh my sister Rosa."

"Awe you two are really cute. This is my friend George. He is visiting here from Violet." The man named George got out the car and shook my hand. I introduced him to Rosa. After Malcolm filled the car up and paid for my gas, he and George invited us to eat lunch at the Cafe down the road.

We all laughed and had a good time. George asked my sister out and Malcolm asked me out. I felt sparks when he kissed me on the lips. I had never had a boyfriend but somehow I felt he could be the one. We said our goodbyes and he promised we would get together when Rosa and I got back from my grandmother's house.

October 1939

Malcolm and I were sitting in his convertible enjoying the sunset. It had been months since Malcolm and I had started seeing each other. He was so nice to me that I was falling in love with him. He was such a gentlemen as he held my hand, opened doors and bought me things. I was only seventeen but I knew without any doubt in my mind I wanted him to be the one to turn me into a woman.
