47. Shaky Ground (Pt. 1)

Seven, not eight

[Kenji POV]

I step back a few steps, seeing Toro's silhouette getting closer and closer. But before I can escape, I trip on a piece of rock.

Toro reaches me, but he strangely just stands there. Then he roars.

"Yeah. Never were much for small talk." I mutter as I get up to face him.

Hawkes suddenly jumps onto Toro's snout and he tries to shake him off. As Toro repeatedly shakes his head, a controller falls out of Hawkes' hands.

Then Hawkes aggressively gashes a chip into Toro's head. He gets thrown on the ground.

The angered Carnotaurus stomps over to him, ready to attack. I do some quick thinking and grab the controller.

Seconds before Hawkes gets eaten, I tap the 'stop moving' button, and Toro halts in the middle of him opening his jaws wide.

Then I control Toro to step back and away from Hawkes.

[Y/N POV]

The earthquake stops shaking the ground.

Yet, the two T-Rexes are still agitated. Little Eatie tries to stomp away, but the drones stop her.

"The earthquake's over. Why are the dinosaurs still freaking out?" Sammy questions.

"I don't know, but they're gonna hurt themselves." Darius says.

"Come on. We have to shut down the drones." Brooklyn says.

"No." Yaz cuts in.

"Why not?" Caleb frowns

"If we do, won't this place be like Nublar all over again, where we're never not almost dying?" Yasmina says.

"But if we leave them, that makes us a little too much like Kash or Mr. Kon."
I protest.

"Well, either way, I'm in for dropping them drones." Sammy says.

"You go ahead. I'll stay here." Darius says.

"What?"

"It'll take a while to shut the drones down. I'll grab Mae's tablet and try to calm them down while you do." He says.

"Good thinking." Brooklyn says. "But maybe someone should stay with you."

"No, that's okay." Darius says. "I'd rather do it alone."

I see the determined glint in his eyes; he's clearly saying this for a reason. Brooklyn sees it too and she nods in understanding.

"Yeah, okay." She says. "Send us a message when you get the tablet."

"Stay safe." I add before we take off in a run.

[Kenji POV]

Hawkes groans, and I offer him my hand.

"Thanks," he says, taking my hand and standing up.

"Likewise." I give him a reluctant smile.

Dad runs up to us. "Kenji! That was some quick thinking."

"It was a team effort." I nod at Hawkes.

Dad smiles at me before turning to Toro's stationary body. "Aesthetically, a scarred dinosaur wouldn't be my first choice, but it should be enough to convince BioSyn."

He and Hawkes walk away, conversing with each other. "We'll need some extra security precautions."

"Copy that." Hawkes responds.
