6 Deportation

What had I done to deserve all this? I didn't have the slightest idea. All I knew was that my whole life was falling apart. Gabriel had not only cheated on me, no, he had also managed to make me lose my job. And as if that wasn't bad enough, he'd also managed to destroy my good reputation.

After I left my old job, I immediately started looking for a new one. I had hoped that this would allow me to extend my visa and stay in the States. But Gab was faster than me. He had already spread rumors about my alleged fraud and lack of professionalism.

So I had no choice but to admit defeat. I lost everything and now I could only return home to start all over again. It was devastating, but I guess that was exactly what he wanted. He wanted to see me knocked down and he had succeeded.

In my frustration, I emptied my third glass of wine in large gulps when suddenly the doorbell rang. With a deep sigh, I put the glass back on the table and walked to the door with my shoulders slumped so I could open it.

"Hey Pumpkin. Thanks for inviting us!" said Summer, who stood in front of me smiling broadly.

Oh no. Because of all the drama, I had completely forgotten that I had invited her and her brother to dinner. Just like I had promised them a few weeks ago.

"Summer, I... I'm sorry." I said slowly before bursting into tears again.

I covered my face with my hands as I sobbed loudly. Immediately I felt her pull me into her arms to calm me down. But it took several minutes for me to regain my composure despite her soothing words.

"DJ, what's wrong?" she finally asked as she led me to the sofa.

Roman followed us after he closed the door. Out of the corner of my eye I saw how worried he looked and that he was taking a look around my apartment. He seemed confused, because everything we had unpacked together was now packed in boxes once again.

"Gabriel made... he made sure I lost my job. He faked documents and emails. Hacked my email account. And he ruined my reputation in the industry. Now I'm being deported. I received the letter two days ago that my visa is no longer valid," I explained after blowing my nose.

"But can't you just get another job? In a different profession, that is?" Roman asked me. His voice was even deeper than I remembered.

"Unfortunately, no. The work visa is only for jobs in the advertising industry. The woman from the USCIS made that clear. And since Gab probably knew that, he destroyed my reputation so no one will hire me anymore," I whispered.

"Son of a bitch!" I heard him mutter.

"Oh DJ.... I'm so sorry! I don't even know what to say. I don't want to lose you. There must be something we can do." said Summer, who was now on the verge of crying herself.

"I know... but I'm afraid there's nothing we can do. The container for my things will arrive in two days and then it's back home for me. Even if it's the last thing I want," I replied.

We talked for a few more minutes until I asked them to leave me alone. I didn't want to ruin their evening any more than I already had. Besides, I wanted to be alone so I could wallow in self-pity.

I was about to turn off the lights so I could crawl into my bed when suddenly the doorbell rang again. That was strange. It was already quite late and I was definitely not in the mood for more visitors. So I decided to ignore it. But whoever it was didn't seem to be discouraged by it. Again and again it rang until I finally had enough and opened the door.

"Roman! What are you doing here?" I asked in surprise as he walked in without hesitation.

"I thought of something to help you so they can't deport you," he said in a determined voice.

"What do you mean?" I wanted to know.

"First of all, you need to pack a bag. It would be good if you did it quickly." he replied, but I still didn't understand what he was getting at.

"Why do I need a bag?" I wanted to know.

"Because we are going to Las Vegas to get married," he said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
