KABANATA 42

"Brazen, Ija!" masayang tawag ng lola ni Isaac sa paparating na nakangiting babae. She's emitting sophistication while coming near. I don't like it.

I don't know but my mood weakened. Medyo nasira ang composure ko lalo pa't mukhang fond sa kaniya ang Lola ni Isaac. Tumayo ito at sinulubong siya.

"I'm glad you came!" she giggled and incircled her hands at her. Tipid na ngumiti sa kaniya si Brazen na hindi pa napapansin ang presensiya ko.

Sinakop ng pait ang labi ko. Ang kaba ay napalitan ng pait. Umiwas ako ng tingin at naabutan ang paninitig sa akin ni Jeremiah. Winaswas ko siya sa aking isip at yumuko.

"Of course naman, Lola Tatina. You know I can't decline you." Brazen said and kissed her cheeks.

Close pala talaga sila. No wonder they're always together kase kilala pala talaga ng pamilya ni Isaac si Brazen at mukhang malapit pa nga.

"Brazen, ikaw pala," sabi ng Mama ni Isaac at tipid na ngumiti sa babae. I don't know her reaction dahil hindi naman ako nakatingin pero narinig ko ang masayang sagot niya.

"Long time no see, Tita! Pastor! I wasn't informed you came home today. Mabuti na lang at sinabi sa akin ni Lola Tatina. I missed you po." Ani niya at umupo mismo sa harapan ko. Sa tabing upuan ni Jeremiah.

"We miss you too, Ija."

Doon niya ako napansin. Tumagal ang paninitig niya sa akin at bahagya pang umangat ang kilay. I stared back. Hindi ako magpapatalo kaya tinitigan ko rin siya ng blanko ngunit may panunuya. I don't know but I just hate her.

Isaac cleared his throat. Doon ko lang naalala na magkatabi pala kami.

"Let me introduce her to you, Ez. She's Brazen, our friend." Pakilala ni Isaac at inituro si Brazen.

"And this is Ezra, the woman I'm courting." Isaac introduced me after and the words he used made my cheeks heated.

Mapalad na ngumiti ang babae sa sinabi ni Isaac. Ngunit alam kong nagpapanggap lang siya. Tumayo siya at inilahad ang kamay sa akin.

"Nice meeting you, Miss Ez," she said jovialy so I forced myself to stand too and be kind. Tinanggap ko ang kamay niya at nakipagshake-hands. Binawi ko rin naman agad at umupo na muli. Ganoon din ang ginawa niya.

"You're so lucky Isaac noticed you!" she beamed and happily looked at us. Para bang siya ang tipo ng kaibigan na supportive. Hindi ko nagawang ngumiti.
