Chapter 10

Gabriel (Rell)

Rell walked through the mall with Maddison, Jace and Kali. They were about to meet his sneaker connect to cop some new shit.

"Lala," Kali screamed letting go of her father's hand and running off.

By time Kali reached Layla, Jace had already catched up to her. "What I told you about running off? You don't pull this shit with your mother."

Layla laughed. "Because we all lowkey afraid of Kam crazy ass."

"Ain nobody afraid of Kam," Jace said as he looked around.

Layla bent down to Kali's height and said. "You better tell ya mama that ya father talking reckless."

Kali laughed and hugged Layla. "Miss you," she said shyly.

"I miss you too boo," Layla smiled.

Rell stood in the background and watched as Jace, Kali and Layla interacted. He was a little jealous at the fact that she didn't even look at him.

"Is that Maddison," she asked as she walked towards Rell.

Maddison was standing behind her father's legs hiding.

"Hey Maddi. It's me Lala? You remember me?"

Maddison looked up at her father then looked backed at Layla. "Lala?"

Layla nodded. Maddison immediately ran over to her. "Hey pretty girl."

Rell couldn't help but smiled at the interaction. He had only known Layla for a short period of time but he couldn't help but feel as though fate was working its magic.

Jace took Maddison and Kali. "We gonna go for some ice cream while y'all talk."

At first Maddison objected but when she heard ice cream she forgot all about Layla and her father.

When they walked off it was just Rell and Layla standing in front of each other awkwardly.

Minutes passed and nothing was said.

Finally Rell spoke up. "So are you done with classes yet?"

Layla nodded. "I finished last week."

"And how ya summer going so far?"

"Great just working and shit. How about you and your family?"

Rell scoffed. "We good."

Layla continued to be petty. "So where's your girlfriend Chanel?"

"You wanna play that game with me?"

Layla shrugged. "I ain playing no games."

Rell felt that if she wanted to be petty, he could too. "Where's your lil girlfriend or that bitch ass doctor you fucking?"

Before Layla could clap back she felt a presence behind her. Rell face contoured into confusion causing her to turn around.

Low and behold stood Josiah with a little girl. Layla watched him and turned back to Rell. "Let's go," she told him.

When she tried to pull Rell away he stood firm in his position sizing Josiah up. "Who this niggas is?"

Layla rolled her eyes. "Nobody. Let's go."

"So that's how it is now Layla," Josiah said smiling. "This yo new nigga?"

"Is that the child you lied about," she shot back.

Rell pulled Layla in front of her, hugging her from behind. "Yea I'm her new nigga. You must not be shit because I ain never heard about you."

He then began to kiss on her neck and whispered loud enough. "You ready to go baby?"

Layla nodded quickly. Her heart was beating so fast she felt like she was about to pass out.

Rell turned them around but kept Layla right under him as they walked off.

Immediately Layla phone dinged signaling a message. When she looked down she saw it was from an unsaved number, meaning it was Josiah.

Rell immediately pulled it out of her hand once it was unlocked and began typing back.

He handed it back and they continued walking to an unknown location.

"Where are you taking me," she asked.

Rell ignored her and continued to pull her with him.

Within a few seconds, they walked into a sneaker store. Rell was greeted by a tall guy.

"If it isn't east side Rell," the man said as he and Rell laughed and dapped each other.

The guy then looked over at Layla, smirking. "This you?"

Rell wrapped his arms around Layla watching the guy like nigga what you think.

"You got them new shit yet," Rell asked.

The man nodded. "Both for you and your little girl. Anything else?"

Rell looked at Layla. "You want anything?"

Layla shook her head. She then waited for the guy to walk off to begin speaking. "Can I go now?"

"I thought we were having a conversation."

Layla laughed. "If that's what you see as a conversation then I guess."

Rell saw the man coming back with about eight shoe boxes. "Let's continue this once we leave."

Before paying the man, Rell opened each shoe box to make sure they were the right design and size for Maddison and himself. Rell nodded in approval then turned away from Layla pulling out a wad of money. He counted off a few hundreds and handed it to the man.

Once the boxes were put into bags, Rell took them and he followed behind Layla as they left.

As Layla was about to walk pass a barber shop, Rell called out to her then motioned for her to follow him. She rolled her eyes but followed suit.

Rell walked through the shop to the back as everyone greeted him. Soon they reached to the office where Rell entered a key code and the door opened. He allowed Layla to walk in first then he closed the door behind him.

As he rested down the bags, he took a seat at the desk. "Sit," he instructed her.

"What do you want from me Rell?"

"Sit," he said again.

"No, what I don't understand is why you felt it was okay to lie to my face."

Rell shook his head. "Can you please sit down so we can talk?"

"No I'm not fucking sitting down. Tell me why'd you lie."

"I didn't lie," he said nonchalantly.

Layla laughed loud. "You know what? I doesn't even matter because you ain shit anyways."

Layla turned to exit out the office but Rell was a lot quicker than her. Before she was able to walk out, Rell sped around the desk and grabbed her. He turned her towards him, holding her hands hostage.

"Let me go Rell," she said impatiently. "Let me go."

"Nah let me talk," he said softly. He was trying to gentle with her, he didn't want to scare her.

Layla continued to wiggle her hands, trying to break free. "Let me go," she said louder.

Rell shook his head. "Let me talk to you."

"No you had the time to talk and you chose not to. Let me the fuck go."

Rell refused to listen. Layla began to wiggle harder to fight his captivity. The two began fumbling and Rell pushed her up against the nearby wall still holding her wrist but above her head this time.

"Would you fucking let me go."

"There is nothing going on between me and Chanel. I told you that from the jump. So dead all that shit you think you know."

"So why the fuck is she laying up on you then?"

"You don't understand," he said shaking his head.

"Well make me understand then."

Rell continued to shake his head.

"Exactly. You fucking liar. All y'all the same. Lie lie lie. Would it kill you to be honest for once."

That triggered something in Rell. "She is fucking sick," he yelled at her. "You don't know shit so don't speak on shit. She is fucking sick. My daughter is about to lose her mother and there is nothing I can do about it."

Layla was shock. She didn't know what to say. She saw the way Rell's face contoured to sorrow and how defeated he look. She continued to stare at him as he stared back at her.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. She was so confused. What did he mean she was sick?

Rell let her wrist go and walked back to his desk.

Layla followed right behind him. She pulled his arm to turn him toward her. "Talk to me," she said softly.

Rell shook his head. "Nah I'm good. You can go if you want."

Layla continued to push. "No talk to me."

When he didn't say anything, Layla guided him into his chair and pulled another chair right in front for her to sit.

They sat in silence for a few minutes. A few minutes turned to two hours of just silence.

Layla sent Nadirah a message letting her know she was still at the mall and it might be a while. She then texted Jace and let him know that she was with Rell in his office.  He had replied he would take the kids back to Kam once they finished their shopping spree.

Almost another hour passed and Rell hasn't even look up. He continued to stare off into space.

"She got sick when we found out about Maddison," he said breaking the silence.

By time he finished telling Layla everything her heart was heavy.
