"The test is going to take the majority of the class time to finish. When you're done, bring your paper up to my desk. Since it's a Friday and this is your last class, you can quietly take your phones out for the remainder of the class period. If I hear any talking or music playing, I will give you a zero on your test."
Mrs. Hernandez stands at the front of the room, reciting the lecture she gives every time we take a test. I barely concentrate on her words, though, too nervous about the test to focus on what she's saying.
"I'm going to pass out the tests now. All material on your desk must be put away except for a pen or pencil and a water bottle. If I hear anyone talking, I'm going to take your test and fail you. You may begin as soon as I hand you your test."
Mrs. Hernandez begins to walk around, passing out the tests one by one. I sit in the back of the classroom in the last row, so I'm the last one she hands the test to. When Mrs. Hernandez hands me my test, she whispers, "Good luck, Helaina."
I smile in response and take the test, putting it down on my desk. I inhale and exhale slowly, reminding myself not to stress out. I grab my pen and pick it up, beginning to read the first question
1. When force and displacement are in opposite directions, the work done is said to be:
A. -ve
B. +ve
C. Infinite
D. Maximum
I think for a moment before circling the correct answer. I move onto the next question.
2. The work done in the gravitational field is independent of:
A. Path followed by body
B. Power
C. Work
D. Force

It takes me over an hour to finish the test. By the time I finish working on the last question and put my pen down, I look up to see I have thirteen minutes remaining in class. I take one last look at my test, making sure I didn't leave any questions blank on accident, before standing up to hand the test into Mrs. Hernandez. I place it on her desk and see she's grading another test, red pen scribbled all across it. My heart rate intensifies and I quickly hurry back to my desk, not wanting to think about the possibility of failing yet another test.
I put my pen away and pull out my phone, unlocking it and going on Snapchat. I answer my snaps and feel my phone buzz with a new text message. I look at the top of the screen to the words Shawn: iMessage
I look next to me, glancing over at Shawn, but he acts as though nothing's wrong and keeps looking at his phone. I sigh and open up his message, curious as to what he has to say.
S: I'm sorry.
I roll my eyes and press my home button twice, closing up the app. I don't need to respond to him. It's pretty obvious that I read the message and that I don't want to talk to him, so what more do I need to do?
Minutes pass in the blink of an eye, and the bell rings for the end of the day. I immediately jump up out of my seat and head over to Julia, not wanting to give Shawn the chance to try and speak to me. Out of the corner of my eye, I can see him getting up from his chair and walking away. Good.
"How do you think you did?" Julia asks me.
"I'm hopeful that I did well enough to bring my grade back to passing." I say.
"Wouldn't you only need like a C to do that?" she asks, and I shrug.
"It's better than failing." I say, and she nods. Just as we're about to head for the door, Mrs. Hernandez calls my name.
"Helaina, can you come here for a second?" Mrs. Hernandez asks.
Julia and I stop and look at each other.
"I'll just go to my locker now. I had to get something out of their, anyway. Meet me there when you're done." Julia says and walks away. I head over to Mrs. Hernandez. I feel my phone vibrate a few times in my pocket, but I don't want to be rude and check it in front of Mrs. Hernandez.
"I just wanted to tell you that if you do well on this test, the tutoring with Shawn won't be necessary anymore." she tells me. I nod. "How did the tutoring go, by the way? Do you feel like it helped?"
"Define power." he says.
"The amount used..." I begin, but he shakes his head no.
"Wrong. Take something off." I take off my cardigan, and Shawn rolls his eyes.
"Um..." I gulp, my mouth going dry and my palms beginning to sweat at the question.
I climb off his lap, sitting on the seat beside him so that we're now face-to-face. Shawn's hands reach forward and gently slip his jacket off of me. His hands go to my bomber jacket and unzips it, taking it off as well. All that's left now is a simple black t-shirt, which, despite having two layers of clothing covering it, is completely saturated and clinging to my body as well. Shawn licks his lips at the sight, leaning in to kiss me on the lips.
"Yeah, I think it was, uh..." I trail off again, my mind completely distracted by wandering thoughts.
I stare at the Chat screen, Shawn's snapchats at the top. I look around, making sure I'm alone before I open Shawn's snapchats.
S: That was so fucking hot
S: Send me more babygirl
S: This is what you did to me.
The last Snapchat is a video. A video of Shawn's hand, wrapped around his dick, going up and down.
I shake my head and nod, pushing the intrusive thoughts away. I smile and say, "Yes Mrs. Hernandez, I do think it helped."
"Well, I'm glad to hear that." she says, a smile now on her own face. "Well, that's all I needed to talk you to about. Your grades will be in Powerschool over the weekend. Have a nice weekend, Helaina."
"Thanks, you too." I say, walking away.
I push open the door and step outside into the now-quiet hallways, the majority of students having left already for the weekend. I turn to head in the direction of Julia's locker, and instead find myself face-to-face with Shawn. My blood runs cold, and I look down, turning away. I try to walk in the opposite direction, but Shawn grabs onto me, spinning me around so that I'm facing him.
"Please talk to me." Shawn begs, his voice quiet and desperate- the exact opposite of what I expected it to be.
"I have nothing to say to you." I say firmly. "Now, if you don't let go of me in the next ten seconds, I'm going to scream for help and Mrs. Hernandez is going to come running out of the classroom to see what's going on."
Immediately, Shawn lets go of me and backs away.
"You know I would never hurt you." he says, his voice trembling.
"Physically, yes. Verbally, on the other hand, you continue to do time and time again." I say.
"What do I have to do to prove to you how sorry I am?" Shawn asks. "I screwed up majorly, and I don't know how to show you how much I regret it."
"I thought that I made it pretty clear to you that there's nothing you can do, Shawn." I say.
"There has to be. I'll do anything, I'll-"
"Helaina!" Julia calls, appearing at the end of the hallway. She starts walking towards us, and when she reaches my side, she grabs onto my arm and puts herself in front of me defensively. "Your conversation is done with her, Shawn."
"Helaina?" Shawn asks, looking past Julia and his eyes landing on me. I look at the ground, letting this be my response.
"Let's go." Julia says quietly, leading me away past Shawn.
"Why didn't you avoid him like I said to?" Julia asks me once we're outside.
"What are you talking about?" I ask.
"You didn't see my texts?"
I shake my head, pulling out my phone. I press the home button and see I have three new message from Julia. I unlock my phone and open up our messages to read them.
J: HELAINA
J: When you leave Hernandez's room watch out!!
J: Shawn's just standing there and I think he's waiting for you
"I didn't even see them until now." I groan.
"Don't let him stress you out. Remember, we're all going to Kennedy's tonight. You have all weekend to forget about him." Julia says, pulling out her keys and unlocking her car.
"You're right." I say, climbing into her car. "All I have to say is that seven o'clock can't come soon enough."
