Chapter 8- The Island Without Sound

I don't own One Piece

....................................................

Waking up to the shouting of an upcoming island wasn't my highlight. Rather, it was actually seeing the colorful inhabited island. There didn't seem to be ships docked, but we were still a good ways away.

I had quickly seated myself on the railing of the ship with my sketchbook. As the ships artist, I wanted to make sure to capture every detail of my first island with them. I had plans to fill another sketchbook with drawing of their past islands, based on the details they told me about them.

Luffy was already at his captains seat, which was the Sunny's lion head. I already had a picture of him seated there, or at least a back profile of him. It was his everyday thing, just as Zoro's napping, Sanji's cooking, Franky's building, Nami's mapping, Chopper's doctoring, Usopp's lying, and Robin's reading. I had managed at least one picture of each crew member doing their daily routine. In between those, I filled my sketchbook with out non-daily routines.

Such as the occasional snow days. Or the marine fights, which happened a lot more than I liked. Even a few pictures of when disaster strikes and we're (meaning the sane people in the crew) all scampering to get away from the situation. Typically in those pictures it's always the strong trio, Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, that stand and fight it. Robin and Franky typically stand by and watch with grins on their faces. And the cowardly trio, Usopp, Nami, and Chopper, are seen running.

It had only been two weeks, but my sketchbook was already half filled. All of a different daily adventure on our ship. I can't wait to see what this island brings, surely it will fill my book with many more delightful pictures.

Feeling someone standing beside me, I looked up. It appeared that the person behind me was Franky, and he was busy looking down at my current sketch.

"That's super good, Katsu!" He grinned, his shades resting on his gravity defying hair.

A small smile formed, "Thanks, Franky."

"Can I look through your sketches?" He asked, his grin still present.

I paused. I wasn't one to just hand over my sketchbook to show my pictures. However, I was the artist so if anything he should be able to see what I've been drawing. Especially since he is included in the pictures. "I guess so.." Slowly, I handed over my sketchbook.

"Oh! I wanna see too!" Chopper called, seeing me hand over my book. Hearing the doctor, Franky held the book a little lower and flipped to the front.

"Is that Katsu's sketches?" Nami asked, walking down the stairs towards us.

Franky nodded, "Yeah, come look at it with us!"

My face was slowly turning red as soon the entire crew was standing around my sketchbook. They looked at my first sketch, which was the day they docked and I drew them standing around the Sunny. To the dinner nights we had, fending off Luffy from our food. To their daily activities. The marines fights, which mainly consisted of the final blows. All the way to the last picture of the island we were at, which was still incomplete.

"Those are really great!" Chopper beamed.

"You've really captured us quite well." Robin complimented.

"Eh, why aren't you in here, Katsu?" Luffy asked, looking through the pictures again.

I blinked, "Huh?"

"Actually, now that you mention it, I don't remember seeing you anywhere in there." Usopp muttered.

"Oh. Well, it's just a little weird to draw myself Besides, I can't look in the mirror to draw me anyway." I rubbed the back of my head. "Besides, it's better and more interesting to draw you guys."

"But you're our namaka too!" Luffy declared. "So you have to be in this book too. Since you're in this adventure with us." He paused before grinning and taking my book. "I'll draw you in!"

Taking away my pencil he turned to a new page and started drawing. His movement was jerky and if I was honest, he had no talent at all. The finished product looked like a three-year-old drew it. It would have looked better as a stick figure.

"Here!" He handed my book back to me with a big grin. "Now there's a picture of you!"

The crew shook their heads at Luffy. "You really added your horrible picture to her collection of beautiful art." Usopp sighed.

I stayed silent, starting at the picture blankly. I believe he tried to draw my daily activity. Which was sitting on the edge of the ship sketching. Nami had hit Luffy over the head, "She looks nothing like that idiot! You didn't even ask to draw in her sketchbook!"

Slowly a smile formed on my face. It wasn't a good drawing by a long shot. However, it wasn't done with any will of insulting me. Actually, it really was Luffy's way of making me include myself.

"Luffy," I said, making everyone go silent as they looked at me. "Thanks, I like it. I'll make sure to include myself for now on."

While everyone looked at me in shock, Luffy grinned. "Good."

..............................................

"Yosh! We're stopping here to restock everything. I'll need to find out how long it takes for the log pose to reset." Nami instructed. "Okay, everyone please stay with your assigned partner, especially you Zoro!"

I didn't stay long to listen to our nagging navigator. Hopping off the ship with my skechbook in hand I started walking towards town. Beside me was Luffy, who had ignored Nami as well. His stomach growled, which seemed to echo through the silent town.

"Ne, I'm so hungry." Luffy complained,  sticking his tongue out.

I smiled, "We can look for a place to eat if you want. Nami gave me some money." I was extremely fond of the idea of having my own money. Apparently Nami gave the straw hats an allowance.

He grinned, "Yosh! Let's fine somewhere to eat!"

However, instead of rushing forward like my captain, I found myself slowing down as I looked around. My eyebrows pulled together as I looked at the road Luffy and I were on. The homes and shops surrounding us were the only thing beside us here.

"Luffy, wait." I muttered, my voice echoing.

Surprising, my captain stopped to look at me impatiently. "Katsu," He whined.

"Don't you find this place a little strange?" I asked.

He tilted his head, "Uh, nope."

Sighing, I figured it wasn't worth it to explain it to Luffy. Perhaps I was just paranoid. This is the first island I have been to, to my current knowledge, other than the one I grew up on. "Never mind."

...........................................

Much for Luffy's luck, we found a small bar that was actually open. Unlike Mamoru's bar though, this one seemed much smaller and far less clean. It was also empty, Luffy and I were the only customers, and it appeared as though we were the first customers in a long time.

The stools cracked under our weight, the wood not used to actually supporting a person. The bartender had yet to actually greet us, apparently too busy cleaning the same glass he has been cleaning since we walked in. Who would have thought that a damn glass had more importance than Luffy and I?

"Food!" Luffy chanted loudly, making the bartender jump and look at us with wide eyes. "Yo! Meat!"

The bartender, who was an elderly man with a balding head and round glasses set the glass down. He studied Luffy then me before approaching us.

I offered a smile, "Hey, can you cook up some meat for my friend here? As you can see he's pretty hungry."

The old man gave me a small stiff nod then walked silently to the back, where I assumed his kitchen was.

"Is he mute?"I muttered, looking at the sticky counter. Wrinkling my nose at the old split sticky beer, I dipped my napkin in the water the man had placed in front of me then rubbed at the bar. Mamoru's bar was always spotless, something this bar was far from.

Luffy's meat chant paused as he saw me wiping our two spots at the bar. "What are you doing?"

"It's filthy, no way am I putting my sketchbook on this bar until its clean. I don't want to stain the cover." I answered, wrinkling my nose as the napkin came away gray dirt and soft yellow stains on it. "Besides, even if you eat anything, it's not sanitary to eat with the bar like this."

Luffy only responded with laughing. "You're so weird."

Rolling my eyes I commented, "Perhaps that's why you're my captain. No sane or normal person could put up with you." Tossing the wet napkin in the trash that sat over the counter. I pulled another clean napkin and wiped it over the damn bar to dry it.

Feeling the, now glossy, bar I felt satisfied that it was now worthy to have my sketchbook on it. If we had found another place I would have rather of gone there, but it appeared that this was the only place that was opened. However, a certain captain of mine is just too impatient.

The old man walked back out of the kitchen, some cooked meat on a white plate. I was pleasantly surprised that the plate was clean. He set the plate in front of Luffy, making absolutely no sound as he did so. I glanced at the swinging door behind him, realizing it was also silent. Either this old man had incredible ninja skills, or something weird is going on.

"Shishishi, thanks old man!" Luffy grinned, taking a big bite out of his food.

The man gave a small smile and nodded. With my elbow resting on the clean part of the bar I rested my hand on top of my hand. I watched as the old man went back to wiping mugs. In my opinion, he should focus on the rest of the bar rather than the same glass he's been cleaning since we got here.

Everything on this island seemed depressing now that we were here. From afar the town seemed inviting and cheerful, from the colorful appearance, but internally it was dark and depressing. Everything was silent, the only sound coming from this island was Luffy and I.

"Hey, what's this island's name?" I asked, noticing a pause in the man's wiping.

However, even with the pause, he did not answer. Sighing in annoyance, I pulled my pencil from my ear and threw open my sketchbook. Roughly drawing a sketch of Luffy's and my back sitting at the bar, along with the bartender wiping at that glass.

My movement stopped as I heard another sound. The thumping of feet, only enough for one person. One small person. A child.

Placing my pencil down I turned around as the door swung open, quite loudly. I stared at the small figure wearing a white dress and sandals. Her dirty blonde hair was tied into a small braid, strands falling out messily framing her childish face.

Her blue eyes looking at the old man. "Grandpa! There are pirates here! I saw them at the port!" Her eyes widened as she saw Luffy and I then. Pointing her finger at us she shouted, "You're the pirates!"

Luffy completely ignored the situation at hand, only continuing to stuff his face. I raised an eyebrow at the girl. "So, somebody actually speaks." I answered, "Stop pointing, kid, it's rude."

She clenched her teeth, glaring at me. "Get out of here! We don't want you here!"

Rolling my eyes I turned around in my seat, resuming my drawing. However, I did go back and add in the child.

"Not happening kid," I muttered. "We just got here, our log pose has to set. Besides, Luffy's eating."

I heard her running to stand beside me with a glare still on her face. Damn brat almost made me miss the unbearable silence. "You don't understand!" She shouted, looking at the old man. "Grandpa!"

He looked at her before looking down. Huffing, I added in some more quick details before slamming my book shut. "Luffy, I'm going to explore a bit. Since I have to draw the island, I want to get to know it."

Looking up at me with a mouth full of food, Luffy nodded. "Okay, Katsu."

As I stood up the girl grabbed the bottom of my shirt. Blinking I looked down at her. "What are you doing?"

She stared at me, slowly her glare lifting and turning to a look of worry. "You don't understand," She whispered, "You're not like them, so you can't go around the town."

"Huh?" I tilted my head, raising an eyebrow.

Her grip tightened on my shirt. She looked at Luffy, who finally put his attention on her, then back at me. "You're not bad pirates. He won't let you go, and you'll get hurt."

"What are you talking about?" I asked, annoyance setting in at her indirect way of speaking.

"The Silent Pirates!" She shouted.

I paused, feeling the name was familiar. Weren't they one of the group of pirates that had tried to take over?

"So, you're scared of quiet pirates?" Luffy tilted his head.

"They're actually quite loud." She commented.

I blinked, my eyebrows narrowing in confusion. "Then why are they called the silent pirates?"

She groaned, whipping her hands down her cheeks. "Their captain ate the silent silent fruit."

My mouth opened as I realized what she meant. "I see, but why is that a problem?"

The child was growing impatient, as well as my childish captain. "He's really strong! And his devil fruit allows him to steal people's voices, their sound! Making everything silent!" Her gaze dropped to the floor. "That's why everything is silent. I'm probably the only one left that hasn't been effected, well actually caught."

"What's so bad about being silent?" I asked, "Wouldn't it make sneaking up on people easier?"

Her bottom lip trembled as she clenched her fist. "Our kingdom is known for music. What use or purpose do we have without sound?" Her clenched fist dropped to hang at her side. "We tried to stop him, but his crew beat us. The few that got to the captain ended up being controlled by him for some reason. And we can't be heard, transponder snails don't really work when nobody can talk."

"Why don't you use one?" I asked.

She frowned, "They think it's a prank, you know, stupid kid calling and whatnot."

Luffy stood, "Thanks for the mean, old man!" Then he looked at the girl. "So you all love music here, right?" He didn't let her answer. "Then I'm going to get a musician here!"

"That's useless!" She shouted, stopping my captain's cheering.

"Huh? Why?" He asked.

"Nobody can make any noise! That pirate stole it from us!" She clenched her fist. "Our music, the thing we treasure here, and we can't use it."

I pressed my lips together. Music was this kingdom's treasure, and it was stolen from them. My drawing and sketchbooks were my treasure. If someone took away my ability to draw, or destroyed my sketchbooks, I couldn't even think of how I would deal with that.

Sighing, I picked up my sketchbook and handed it to the kid. She wrinkled her nose and looked at me in confusion. I only grinned with determination. Hopefully Luffy would go along with my sudden decision.

"I guess I'll just have to take down those pirates. Do me a favor, don't let anything happen to that book. It's my own treasure." I explained.

Luffy grinned, "You're on the same thought as me! Yosh, let's go kick some silent ass!"

The girl looked at us strangely. "Why would you help us? You're pirates!"

Adjusting my daggers and pistol on my belt, I answered. "You asked us to."

"Huh?" She shouted, "I told you two to get out of here!"

I smirked, "Well, then it's unfinished business. Mamoru didn't teach this guy well enough." I pointed my finger in the air. "It's not nice to steal other people's freedom and treasure."

"Mamoru?" Luffy muttered, tilting his head at me. "What's he got to do with this?"

Looking over at my captain, I answered. "If I remember correctly, he tried to take over Gold's island. It didn't work of course. We aren't weak."

The child's eye twitched. "Are you calling us weak?"

Looking down at the child I didn't pause. "Yes."
