Connor's POV

"Connor, do you know the answer?"

My head shot up from my book and I stared at the teacher, blankly. My eyes glanced at the board, where I saw x's and y's written all over. An equation was written in the middle; another one of those 'solve for x' type things.

"Um..." I looked down at my book again, remembering that I'd just covered my page with doodles about music. At least it was better than boring notes about surds and step functions. "Could you give me a second to work it out?"

Mr Green raised his eyebrows at me, before nodding reluctantly.

Ignoring his serious gaze, I began writing out the working for the question. I wouldn't call myself the smartest, but I knew I was more academically advanced than more than half the people at my school. I knew exactly how to work out the equation, but it was more of a matter of whether I could be bothered to or not.

I felt a subtle nudge on my knee and looked to my right. Zoe was staring at me, with her palm open. I looked down and saw the answer written on her hand, and sent her a grateful smile.

"Um, x is 2 times the square root of 6." I answered, looking back up at Mr Green, who hadn't seemed to notice the help I'd gotten from Zoe.

For a maths teacher, he was pretty stupid. Zoe and I were best friends, and we'd always help out the other whenever one of us was called on to answer a question. Somehow, Mr Green had never noticed, and just assumed we'd answered the questions on our own.

"That is correct." He sighed, obviously disappointed that I'd gotten it right.

As he continued on with the lesson, I turned to Zoe.

"Thanks." I whispered.

"No problem." She replied, keeping an eye on the teacher, in case he heard us talking.

"I'm so hungry." I whined.

"Me, too. Don't worry, we've only got 2 minutes left." She said, grinning. "Have you got English next?"

"Yeah. You've got Art, right?" I confirmed.

She nodded and turned back to the front.

I sighed and tried to concentrate on whatever Mr Green was talking about. After what seemed like ages, the bell finally rang, signifying that I was finally free.

All at once, everyone stood up, including Zoe and me, and rushed out the door.

"Remember your homework!" Mr Green called, before we were all out of the classroom.

Zoe and I headed straight for our lockers, which we were lucky enough to have right next to each other. As we put our textbooks in our lockers, we heard a commotion from around the corner.

"What do you think's happened now?" Zoe laughed.

"I don't know." I rolled my eyes. "Let's just go to the cafeteria, because Tyler's definitely going to know what's up. And I'm also starving."

"It's probably some people being idiots again." She shook her head.

"Yeah. Probably." I shrugged, shutting my locker.

I slung my bag over my shoulders, as we made our way to the cafeteria. Zoe led us to our usual table, where I saw Tyler, Joe, and Caspar already waiting there.

"Hey, what took you guys so long? Couldn't bear to part with Maths? Or maybe you just love Mr Green that much." Tyler waved, chuckling.

"Yeah. How'd you guess?" I replied, sarcastically.

I sat down and stole a sandwich off Joe's tray.

"Hey!" He protested, before I took a big bite out of it.

I shrugged. "So, what are you guys doing tonight?"

"Nothing much, why?" Caspar answered, his mouth full of pizza.

"You guys could come over to my room. To study and shit." I replied, taking another bite of Joe's sandwich.

"Yeah, I can come." Zoe and Tyler said at the same time, before bursting out laughing.

"I think we're both free. Right, Joe?" Caspar turned to Joe, who was stuffing his mouth with jelly.

He nodded, unable to answer.

"Wait, but I'm not even allowed in the boy's wing." Zoe reminded me.

"Oh yeah." I sighed.

"But the teachers don't actually monitor who goes in or out, do they?" Tyler asked.

"Now that you mention it, I don't think I've actually ever seen a teacher around the dorms." Joe said. "Probably because Caspar here keeps farting and scares them off."

"Yeah, whatever." Caspar rolled his eyes.

"Besides, I'm pretty sure the teachers know that most of the guys that go here are gay or at least bi, so there's really no point in not letting you in." Tyler laughed.

"That's true." Zoe grinned. "So what time should I come over?"

"Anytime's fine. And bring some food to eat while we, you know, study." I said, putting air quotations around the word 'study'.

"Okay. Casp and I are probably only going to make it after 6." Joe replied, smiling at Caspar. "We're going on a date."

"Of course." I rolled my eyes, grinning. "Ever since you two got together, you haven't spent a minute apart."

"You're just jealous because you don't have a boyfriend." Caspar stuck his tongue out at me.

I feigned hurt, putting my hand over my heart. "Excuse me?"

Tyler laughed, before turning serious. "No, but seriously, Con."

"What?" I sighed, knowing exactly where this conversation was going. "I don't need a boyfriend."

"You don't need one, or you don't want one?" He raised his eyebrows.

"Is there even a difference?" I asked.

"Everyone needs a boyfriend, whether they like it or not. I just don't get why you don't want one." He answered, rubbing his nose.

"I don't know." I replied, honestly. "I'm just waiting for the right guy to come along, as cheesy as it may sound."

"But you're in high school! You're supposed to be going out and meeting guys and having fun." He flung his arms in the air.

"Yeah, but I don't want to get my heart broken. Not like last time." I answered, sadly.

Zoe put her hand on my shoulder, kindly. "Look, Con, I know Matthew really messed you up, but Tyler's right. Don't you think it's time to go out and find a nice guy?"

"I don't know." I said, again. "I'm just scared, I guess. What if I fall in love? And he ends up like Matthew?"

"Then we'll be right here waiting for you, with hugs and ice cream." She smiled.

"I think I'll just stick with waiting for the right guy. That's what I want to do." I said, nodding.

"Okay, okay." She replied, with a sigh.

"So," Joe said, changing the subject. "Do you want to head to English now?"

I nodded. "Sure, let's go. See you guys."

Joe and Caspar stood up and the three of us walked to English together. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see their hands intertwined and I felt a strange feeling in my stomach.

I didn't need a boyfriend. Not right now, anyway.

I'd just keep waiting for Mr Right. Because I knew, if he was the one, he'd never break my heart.
