Happiness is a butterfly

Lana Del Rey

The night was paler than usual. The stars were unseen by the eye through the misty fog that was collecting in the air that night.

Riley giggled happily as Sam mumbled on awkward jokes as the two of them sat in the car. Sam had one hand on the wheel and the other on his girlfriend's thigh, rubbing his thumb on her unconsciously. Riley had no idea where the two of them were going, it was Sam's little surprise.

Riley hadn't told him about her situation, she wasn't ready. Though she feared what his reaction might be. The two of them really liked each other, they even told one another. But she didn't know how he would feel about it. She was worried.

He drove gently on the straight road until they stopped near the woods. He took the car in a secluded patch of grass, evergreen trees on each side surrounding this pasture with a gentle breeze blowing on their leaves. Though it was nighttime, the clouds were present in the sky making it even more private.

"Is this the surprise?" Riley frowned.

"The surprise is yet to come." Sam smiled and leaned in to kiss her lips. His sudden gesture made her falter for a moment, she kissed him back and smiled through his lips.

Sam took her smile as a motive to keep going, he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her closer. Riley was slightly hesitant, she didnt want to do this right now.

He placed his hand on her cheek kissed her intently, though it felt as it Riley wasn't responding. He pulled her closer trying to tell her she's safe, yet the kiss still felt forceful.

He pulled away with their lips brushing with one another. "Are you okay?" He asked worried moving away further.

"What do you mean I'm fine." Riley responded casually, already feeling the overwhelming urge to tell him come up to the brim.

"Riley don't say that. You've been acting weird all week. Is something wrong?" He asked taking her hand and squeezing it.

There was silence.

He looked at her anticipating an answer. Riley only stared down at her lap, she felt a sudden burning rise in her stomach, a feeling she wanted to escape but was afraid to let out. She wanted to tell, him she had too.

Sam didn't disrupt the silence, he waited patiently for her answer. Whatever it was, he knew she needed room to say it.

"I'm pregnant."

His heart stopped.

His stomach dropped.

He felt a sudden bead of perspiration drop down his forehead, his mouth was wide open as he struggled to find air.

Sam's hand left Riley's, his head fell into his grip and he rubbed his eyes.

Riley sat there saying nothing. What could she say after all? She felt a bundle of thorns in the middle of her throat, one that kept poking her insides and urging her to cry. But she didn't cry, her eyes went red but she didn't cry, she promised herself she wouldn't let out a single tear.

Sam sat there in silence, staring in front of him. He took a deep breath and without saying anything, Sam started the car and drove back to Riley's house.

The two of them didn't say a word, there was an unspoken tension, a fear that the other might let loose and cry. Sam stopped in front of her house and pressed the button to unlock the doors.

"I think you should go to sleep." He said in a lifeless tone, there was no emotion in it.

"Sam.." She began gently but he cut her off.

"I don't think I can deal with this right now." He said stubbornly and Riley's eyebrows furrowed in anger. She didn't want to fight with him, there was no point.

She abruptly got out of the car and ran inside her house. A tear rolling down her delicate cheeks.

Her soft brown eyes watched as the brush gently danced on the fine white paper leaving behind a trail of blue colour.

Divs put a curled strand of her hair behind her ear and began to paint on red colour onto her piece.

It might come as a surprise, but Divs always painted when she couldn't get something out of her mind. Divs was naturally a charming soul, yet she never displayed the things she was good at to the world. Not many people knew of her talents when it came to painting, only Louis. She remembered the day clearly when they were fourteen. She sat in her art class in the break hours, telling the other four that she had homework to complete. One of these hours as she painted across the plain canvas she discovered Louis used to watch her everyday behind the window when she used to work. This was around the time when she lost her dad, it was as hard as when she lost Louis.

Only Louis knew she had a knack for art on paper, and he admired her immensely for it. That's when she fell in love. He never appreciated her as more than a friend, and she was a fool to think that these past few months he might have. To her, he always looked at her as a friend. Nothing more.

A tear left her eyes as she remembered the times she had thought he loved her. There aas a part of her that hoped he would come back to her, but she knew her mind wouldn't let him close until it surrendered to let her heart take control. She loved him, but she couldn't help but feel as if she was someone he was forced to fall in love with. She knew he meant every word he said, but she also knew that he never loved her first. She was never his first choice, she would never be the right person for him. Because she was just an obsessive girl who he got stuck with.

Her throat became tight and she felt a stinging pain inside her neck, she couldn't help but cry.

"What happened to your finger?"

"I was cutting tomatoes for breakfast."

Tom ran his thumb over Y/n's ring finger and kissed it where it had been wounded. Y/n smiled and rested her head on his chest.

Y/n was sitting on Tom's lap as the two of them lay on his bed. His arm was wrapped around her waist as the other played with her fingers, gently caressing them. Her head was delicately placed on him as Tom's lips were buried in her hair.

It had been a long day, all the two of them needed was to feel the comfort of each other's presence. Y/n's stomach used to tickle as he kissed her head every now and then, though it erupted into butterflies when he ran his thumb on her skin.

"Your amazing." He whispered close to her and pressed his lips on her temple.

Y/n blushed in response and the comfortable, placid silence fell upon them.

"You wanna do something right now." He asked lightly, playing with her fingers.

"Yeah sure, what do you wanna do?" She answered lifting her head slightly to look at him.

"Well... we could go to a game at four. We have two hours to book the seats I'm sure we can manage to get in." He said enthusiastically and Y/n raised her eyebrows.

"Yeah that's cool. I rather sit outside in the weather and look up at the clouds you know?"

"No what that's boring." He said leaving her fingers.

"I mean it's better than a game, I don't even know how the fuck you play football. I'll just sit there staring at a bunch of sweaty gross guys." Y/n said sitting up and facing her boyfriend.

"Y/n clouds don't have shapes, they just... EXIST?!?" Tom said argumentatively and folded his arms.

"That makes no sense. Besides why can't we just stay here and do what we're doing now." Y/n leaned in and held his face in her hands. She kissed his lips and he smiled.

"Yeah I'd prefer that." He engulfed her once again and they rested in silence once again lost in their own similar thoughts.

"You know, we're very different." Y/n began running her thumb on his chest. "Sometimes I wonder how we managed to get along."

Tom laughed slightly. "Honestly."

"I have an idea." Y/n said sitting up straight again and looking at Tom.

"Oh no. Now what?" He mumbled and she began to speak.

"What if we make a pact?" She inquired.

"A pact?"

"Yeah, what if for the next few months we take each other to places that we like and make each other do things we like to do, without the other objecting to any of it."

"What are you suggesting?"

"Every week both of us are going to pick any activity we like to do, and the other has to do it no matter what. I can take you to book stores and on long walks, while you can do your dumb sports stuff."

"Is this important?" Tom asked lazily.

"YES, this way maybe we can come to like each other's hobbies and avoid any arguments on what to do."

Tom looked at Y/n blankly.

"Come on!" She exclaimed and he rolled his eyes with a sneer.

"Alright deal." He muttered and she jumped on him wrapping her arms around his body excitedly.

"I CAN'T WAIT TO MAKE YOU DO ALL THAT BORING STUFF!"

"And I can't wait to teach you football."

"Ew." She pulled away and he chuckled.

An hour or two had passed and the two were still giggling about ordinary things in life. The pillows were all scattered on the floor due to...unexplainable reasons and the bed sheets were almost falling off the large bed.

Tom and Y/n were simply lying the way they had before but with bigger smiles on their faces.

"Okay I need to go." Y/n said hopping off the bed and putting on her jacket.

"No what why? Your always going." Tom said attempting to be adorable, which failed unfortunately.

"Dad wants me home."

"You live right across the street Y/n." Tom whined and Y/n only smiled.

"Dad wants to have dinner with you this weekend, just you, me and him." She said picking up her small bag and heading for the door.

"I don't want to meet your dad."

"You seem to get along fine with him Tom. You were alright at that family dinner. "

"Yeah but that was before I was your boyfriend. Now he's going to be looking at me and shit."

"Okay Thomas, I'll tell my dad to not look at you." She mumbled with a laugh and opened the door.

"Bye, I miss you already." Tom said giving her a dreamy smile and Y/n chuckled.

"Don't be so desperate." With that the two laughed and she left.
