Getting drunk with Regulus (with a love confession because im a hopeless romantic)
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
"Remind me why we're doing this again?" Regulus said grumpily as he crouched down to avoid hitting his head on the low ceiling of the passageway you were standing in.
You grinned at him, taking his hand so you could continue to pull him to the exit. "Because in two days you'll be seventeen and it'll be perfectly legal for you to drink in the wizarding world which also means it'll be way less fun."
"So you're dragging me up to the astronomy tower at one in the morning so we can get drunk?" he asked incredulously.
"Yes! Come on Reggie live a little" you said "this is a right of passage, my friend."
Regulus rolled his eyes "you're nutty" he said but once you'd turned away to leave the passage he smiled softly at your retreating form. As much as he pretended to be annoyed by it he was touched by the effort that you, his best friend, had gone to.
Before long you'd reached the astronomy tower and Regulus reached out, instinctively, to trace the tiny initials carved into one of the mossy outer stones. "R.A.B" alongside yours. You'd done it in your third year, when you'd first started sneaking up here, using a penknife he'd stolen from Sirius in the summer. It felt like so long ago now and he thought wistfully at how much life had changed. But then you were calling his name grinning at him, your eyes alight in the glow of the stars, and he smiled at the familiar sight. He hoped that this, you and him spending time together, would never change even with adulthood creeping up on you both.
You reached into the old disused broom closet that the two of you stashed things in, pulling out a tattered old Slytherin blanket and a bottle of Ogdens finest firewhisky. "Look what I got" you said with a smirk as you shook the bottle in his direction, the amber liquid glowing as it reflected off of an abandoned telescope. Regulus' eyes widened. When you'd said you'd get alcohol he hadn't expected you to be able to get firewhiskey. "Where did you get that?" he asked in disbelief but you merely looked coyly at him and tapped your nose to indicate you were keeping your secrets.
You unscrewed the top, lifted the bottle to your lips and took a long sip, grimacing as the alcohol burned on its smooth descent down your throat. Regulus took the bottle from your hand, the brush of his fingertips against yours heating you up more than the whisky ever could. He took his own sip, shuddering himself at the taste.
"I thought it would taste better you know" he said, pulling the bottle back to inspect it. You lifted it from his hands shrugging as you drank another, smaller, sip. "It's supposed to burn less the more you drink."
"Fuck it then" he said taking the biggest sip yet. You watched as the liquid passed his lips, the way his smooth white throat rippled as he swallowed and you gulped giggling nervously as he passed you the bottle back.
"Wanna play a game?" you asked, reaching back into the cupboard to pull out your battered exploding snap deck. He nodded and you took another drink, noticing as you did that it didn't burn nearly as much this time. You supposed that you were already getting used to the unfamiliar sensation.
Two hours passed and more than half of the large bottle of fire whisky was gone. The game of snap had long since been abandoned as the effect of the alcohol flooded into you quicker than either of you had realised.
"Hey Reg, Reg" you said, smacking him lightly on the leg when he didn't reply right away.
"What?" he said huffily.
"C' mere" you giggled and he moved to lay on the floor beside you, his warm leg pressing into yours. "Look" you said, taking his hand and using it to point upward "It's Sirius."
"Sirius?" he said in confusion, his drunk brain not catching onto your meaning right away "no I'm Regulus."
You laughed like he'd just made the funniest joke ever, sitting up slightly to have another swig of whisky. "No, not you" you said in between giggles "in the sky, look we can see Sirius - the brightest star in the sky."
Regulus scoffed "of course we can see Sirius" he said, his tone laced with annoyance "It's always about bloody Sirius."
"There just stars Reggie" you said absentmindedly, taking his hand in your own and playing with the Black family signet ring he wore.
He sighed, the sound escaping his lips as a huff of frustration. "But they're not just stars" he said "they're - they're us - and he gets everything and everyone. I'm stuck forever as Sirius' little brother. Even you fancied him in second year!"
You rolled onto your side, turning to face him instead of the sky "what are you on about? I did not fancy Sirius in second year!"
Regulus rolled his eyes "yes you did Y/N, It was when me and you were just starting to be friends and you'd stutter like crazy whenever you spoke."
You furrowed your brow in confusion, squeezing Regulus' fingers as you carried on playing with the rings as you thought. Suddenly it dawned on you what he was talking about. You remembered it now, the times spent with the marauders and Regulus. It was back when Regulus was still close to Sirius and you met them all through Remus tutoring you in defence against the dark arts. Eventually you and Regulus had gotten close became best friends and separated away from Sirius and the others. You began laughing uncontrollably as you thought about Regulus' mistake. "I can't believe that all this time you thought I fancied your brother" you wheezed in between laughs
"You did!" Regulus protested, his voice slightly slurred from the effects of the drink "or else what did you act like that for? Everyone bloody fancied my brother."
You sipped some more whisky, it made you feel light and airy and you didn't consider what any of your words or actions meant. You sat up slightly, leaning on your propped elbow so you were staring right at his face. Those piercing silver eyes shining in the darkness of night back up at you. "I fancied you." You said "not Sirius. I was like that because I had a crush on you."
"Oh" Regulus said, disbelief flashing across his handsome features "you - you did?"
"I did" you confirmed "I was twelve and you had curly hair and a dimple, that did it for me."
Regulus grinned, the action of it transforming his features beautifully. "Does it not do it for you anymore?" He asked with a cheeky arched brow. The alcohol make confidence flow through his veins. He was scarcely aware of his thoughts. He seemed to just be doing things.
"Ah" you said "a pretty face can only get you so far, I got to know you and your personality put me right off."
"Rude!" He exclaimed pushing you. The push disoriented you slightly and you slipped from your propped elbow falling slightly on top of him.
"Look at you falling for me" he teased "it's like second year all over again."
"Oh shove off!" You said "I was twelve I didn't have standards. Who did you fancy when you were twelve?"
"You" Regulus replied instantly, the alcohol like a truth serum.
"You're just saying that" you scoffed.
"No no" Regulus slurred, he reached out and grabbed a strand of your hair twisting it in his long elegant fingers. "You used to wear ribbons in your hair" he said "green ones and I saw you in the great hall one day talking to Lupin and retying them. I started hanging out with Sirius more then so I could talk to you."
Your eyes widened as you listened to his half slurred speech. You could tell he was telling the truth. Your heart fluttered slightly, he'd really liked you back then? Part of you wished you'd known but maybe if you had you wouldn't be here right now all these years later. Best friends and drunk off your arses on the astronomy tower at 3am.
The topic moved on after that but it never left your head. The truth was you still liked Regulus. Your feelings for him having only grown stronger over the years. The effects of the fire whisky made you want to tell him, it made you want to scream your love for him from the rooftops but you'd already admitted more tonight than you ever would have sober so instead you just carried on drinking.
You awoke in an unfamiliar room. Red hot sunlight pouring through the opened curtains and spilling onto the bed. The brightness of it making you squeeze your eyes shut and groan. "Where 'm I?" You croaked out voice thick with dehydration.
"Gryffindor 7th year boys dorm" a voice to your left causally said.
You jumped noticing Remus Lupin was sitting casually on the chair beside the bed you were lying in "what the?"
The door opened and Sirius walked in carrying two glasses of water and passing one to you. "Oh good you're awake" he said "do you remember what happened last night?"
You scrunched up your nose, downing the glass of water as you thought. God your head hurt, you were never drinking fire whiskey again. Flashes of memory began to return to you. You remembered the sun rising beautifully on the astronomy tower, the pink hue of it casting Regulus' face in a reddish glow. You remembered the two of you trying to dance and arguing about who was stepping on who's feet. You remembered the nearly empty fire whisky bottle and you and Regulus staggering through the corridors trying to find your way back to the common room but finding it hard to walk. You remembered how everything had seemed so hilarious, how you'd laughed and held onto each other as you fell about. Then you vaguely remembered the marauders finding you both and you felt your face get incredibly hot as you remembered with mortification that you'd drunkenly told Sirius - who was helping you walk at the time - to fetch Regulus back because you wanted "the hot brother."
"Oh god" you groaned. "Unfortunately yes, I do remember last night."
"Ah good so you remember you owe me a new pair of shoes then."
"I - I what?" You said confused, massaging your temple.
"You don't remember puking on my shoes?" Sirius asked slightly amused.
"I WHAT?" You shouted "Jesus Christ, I'm never drinking again."
"you were alright after you puked" Sirius said "brushed your own teeth and got changed yourself. Regulus on the other hand, we had to basically carry him."
"Do you remember Regulus singing?" Remus enquired.
"Regulus was singing?" You asked, your head was reeling trying to recall the drunken escapades you'd blocked out.
Sirius grinned "come on Moony" he said to Remus. The pair of them got up and began to leave the room ignoring your protests of "hey wait! Where are you going?"
As they left they ushered in a rather dishevelled looking Regulus, Sirius clapping him on the back and laughing before he left. It appeared that Regulus had woken up before you and he was gnawing his bottom lip between his teeth anxiously as he looked at you.
"Look Y/N" he rushed out, talking so fast it made your head reel "I'm really sorry about last night. I was drunk and I didn't know what I was doing. I completely understand you don't feel the same way."
You blinked at him "Reg what are you talking about?" You said.
"Oh gods you're going to make me say it aren't you? Okay Y/N I'm sorry I told you I'm in love with you and serenaded you with Weird sisters songs I - I have no explanation like I say I was drunk and -"
You cut him off "you love me?" You said in disbelief.
"Oh Merlin" Regulus said, scrubbing a hand anxiously across his face "sort of - yes? I like you - more than as a friend. I know you don't feel the same way though I just - I hope we can stay friends. I don't want this to change things."
You stared at him. Speechless as your brain tried to catch up to what was happening. He must have drunkenly made some kind of love confession to you last night but you didn't remember that at all. The last thing you remembered was being found by the marauders in the seventh floor corridor. But this meant - this meant Regulus liked you too! Suddenly despite your burning headache and hangover, despite your promises to never drink it again you loved firewhiskey. You loved firewhisky because it had led you to this.
"Il just" Regulus pointed to the door "leave you then" he said dejectedly. He began to walk towards the door and you panicked, without thinking about it you leapt out of bed and pulled on his arm so he was facing you. His soft silver grey eyes met yours, wide and full of hope and you smiled. "You're an idiot Regulus Black" you said "but your my idiot." He barely had time to break out into a smile before you'd kissed him. He tasted like spearmint toothpaste and hangover potion, his lips were perfect and soft against yours.
The door opened and you vaguely heard Sirius shout "ITS HAPPENING MOONY THEY'RE KISSING I TOLD YOU." You pulled away from Regulus tempting lips, foreheads resting together as you chucked at his brothers antics.
"So" you said lacing your fingers together with his, an evil smirk playing out on your lips "what's this about serenading me with the weird sisters?"
Regulus paled and scratched the back of his neck sheepishly "I was really drunk" he said.
"And I got a camera for my birthday" Sirius said from the end of the room grinning wolfishly as he held up a stack of freshly developed moving photographs of a very drunk Regulus and y/n.
