Once, Forever

Once upon a thousand years,
The passion rises in song;
Once upon a sunset eve,
The pride soars low on wings.

Once upon a dreaded night...
A predator takes its flight.

Then fury takes the passion
And bitterness steals the pride.
Sorrow eats all the joy that ever bubbled inside.

Once upon a sacred land,
Magnificence turns to dust.

The bird is scarcely as it was;
It hides within a tree of shame.
It wishes that the hunter would only end his game.

Once upon an empty shore,
The monster craves a meal.

Darkness gnaws at hollow bones
In the perilous absence of light;
All hope is drowned inside a sea of stinging bite.

Forever entangled in desperate cries,
Forever consumed by aging time.

But the story fades away
In all it will ever be;
Now all that's left is a shattered image of me.

Once upon a stolid breath,
Forever sheds its icy tears.

I can face myself no longer;
No, not one look can be spared.
I admit, sometimes I wish I never truly cared.

Forever breathing tainted air,
Forever dimming in the light.

Forever, I will struggle in vain
Against the never-ending waves...
And when my head goes under, I know I won't be saved.
