They Say

33 8 8

They say you can light
Even the darkest night,
And with a love so strong,
You can right every wrong.

They say you can hear
Every heartbeat, so clear,
And that you love us so,
With love that won't grow cold.

But what have we to say
When we bow our heads to pray?
Our hearts are empty
And our thoughts are dirty.

Instead of awe, we give
You venom, and live
In ignorance of
This unrequited love.

They say you give hope,
A lifeline, a rope,
To those in despair,
For they are in your care.

They say you came down
From the sky to the ground
To give up your life
And to bear all our strife.

But what have we to say
When we bow our heads to pray?
Our hearts are empty
And our thoughts are dirty.

Instead of thanks, we give
Our poison, and live
Like your sacrifice was
Just a worthless cause.

They say it is true
That you love me, too.
That you gave me your life
And bore all my strife.

And if all this is true,
Then I want to give you
The night inside me--
The wrong that I bleed.

If all this is true,
Then I want to give you
The heartbeat in me--
All the love that I bleed.

If all this is true,
Then I need to tell you,
Lord, that I'm sorry
For the wickedness in me.

But they say you forgive
Even the worst that have lived,
So I know that you
Can forgive me, too.
