No word today; I didn't use any big words in this chapter. My brain got lazy.

SHE COULDN'T BELIEVE what he just told her. Her heart immediately went from broke to shattered. She always had this feeling that Adrik wasn't telling her the whole truth. Her intuition was constantly whispering that things were just too good to be true. Who would've guessed that it was right?

"Please," he called out to her, bringing her out of her thoughts. Adrik reached for her hand that she let him take. Her eyes remained locked on his in shock. She began to wish that the betrayal she felt would disappear so that she could look at Adrik one more time and not want to cry.

"I do not want to lose you," he said. His hand pulled her into his chest, and he wrapped his arm around her waist. He pressed his head into the crook of her neck while Avelina stayed robotic. A trail of heartbreak left his fingertips, and it pained her.

"How could you keep this from me?" She cried.

"I do not know. I felt it would be logical to think that if I told you about all of this, then you would hate me. I knew that you would leave me, and I cannot endure the thought of never holding you again. I need you with me," Adrik pleaded. His arm was tightening around her. The thought of never holding her like he was doing now was difficult even to comprehend. She was his in every way, and he wanted her in that way forever.

There was a guilt Avelina kept with her for years after her grandmother died. She thought her grandmother killed herself because she no longer cared for Avelina. The whole time, she built her life based on that tragic experience to hear that it was all caused by the sister to the man she loved.

Memories played out in her mind of all the moments Avelina and her grandmother shared. All the happiness, the taught lessons-everything. She loved her grandmother more than she loved anyone in the world. When she came home from school to see her grandmother passed away with this lifeless look on her face, it was the worst day of her life. It was the second family member that she had ever seen dead, and it was too traumatic even to fathom.

After that moment, Avelina was put into a group home full of mean girls who taunted her very existence. She grew a newfound hate for herself that wouldn't have been there if her grandmother was still alive--If it hadn't had been for Adrik's sister.

Taking a step back, she continued to look at him.

"Tell me why. Why did she do that? What did my family ever do to her?" Avelina asked, tears freely finding a path to slide down her face.

"She wanted to get into this dangerous lifestyle, and to get in; you have to perform a task. The previous leader gave her the job to find you no matter the costs. So, she went and-"

"I'm sorry. I just can't, Adrik. A task? You see, my grandma dying as just a task? I was hoping for a legitimate reason just so it could make it easier to forgive you, but there isn't, is there?"
