Emily

Isaac and Jane had driven at twice the speed limit to reach them as soon as possible.

Sarah kept passing in and out of consciousness, Mathias protectively holding her head on his shoulders. He never touched her, as if he bewore of his own hands.

They were crammed into the passengers seats at the back, which didn't leave much empty space. Emily tried to avoid looking at the mortal as much as possible, concentrating on explaining their encounter with Dawson and what they discovered. She only left out the part with her ability to dissolve and Mat's immortality.

There was already too much on their plate.

-That viscid wobbly worm - cursed Jane tightening her grip on the wheel. -He deserved to die. But did you the right thing Ems, that what some solid path-changer moves you pulled. -

Emily knew her friend had meant it as a compliment. She hadn't even thought of it ... but she did change Dawson's path.

-So the mist people want the mortal and tons of copper - said Isaac. - Yup, that makes no sense. -

Mathias awoke from his trance. -The mortal has a name. - he objected. -And we cannot let them take Sarah. -

Emily rolled her eyes. -Don't worry, we didn't go through that much trouble to rescue her just to hand her over. Chill Romeo. -

Mathias was about to object when a police car forced them to stop. Apparently travelling 100 km/h in the city was a good way of getting in trouble.

A young police woman knocked on the driver's window.

Jane put on a charming smile. -Was I going a little too fast officer? - she chirped leaning on the door.

-Can I see your driver's licence young lady? - she replied coldly. Jane was not going to get out of trouble by flirting.

Her friend seemed to realise that and went to grab her fake ID.

Everything would have probably been fine if Sarah hadn't decided to wake up in that exact moment and started to scream.

-No, Sarah it's fine, don't... Ah! - Mathias got kicked in the nose.

The police woman took out her gun. -Everyone out of the car, NOW! -

No one moved. Jane's smile didn't falter.

-You haven't seen anything out of the ordinary. - she said, putting power in her words. -You are so tired, you probably should call for a break. -

The police woman slowly released her hand on the gun.

-I am very tired. - she agreed. - I should call for a break. -

The woman stepped back into her car and they started the engine.

Sarah's screams had gone back to sobbing uncontrollably, which could have not been any good for her broken ribs.

-Oh my God! She's a witch! She controlled the woman who could save us! Mathias why are you holding me still, we need to run! -

Jane laughed and Isaac scowled at her.

-Don't be mean Jane, she is under shock. - he said. -And it's not like it is the first time we got exchanged for witches, remember the Middle Ages? That was a bad time to be immortal. -

-Guys, you are not helping - muttered Mathias. -Sarah please, we are trying to help. There are some really bad people trying to hurt you and we want to protect you. -

That seemed to get her attention. She calmed down and hid her face in his shoulders again. He pat her blond curls and whispered kind words to her ears.

Emily would have gladly jumped off the car, but luckily they had reached the safe house.

Isaac helped Sarah out of the car, and she let him. Emily figured that even if she thought him a wizard, he was still pretty damn attractive and maybe worth getting cursed once or twice.

Andre went into full unpacking mode and tried to force feed them some read and biscuits. Everyone was so tired, they let her have her way. Plus she was pretty intimidating when waving a chocolate digestive like they were knives.

Sarah was getting bandaged by Isaac, who was also talking her into letting him use magic to cure her ribs.

-It won't hurt? - she made sure. -And won't like ... turn me into one of you? -

Jane laughed. -Yeah cause it would be such a terrible thing to be immortal and have superpowers. -

Andre threw a biscuit at her to tell her to shut up. She did.

-The pregnant lady says we all go to bed and ... -

The beeping sound of the "Magic Finder 2000" stopped abruptly leaving them in silence. Emily looked at the screen, now showing a map of the planet. Little dots of light were spread all over the continents, their essence representing the magical immortals. A wider smudge of light was in Cicero, at the centre of Chicago, right where they were living. But her attention was focused on something else. A wave of blinking dots was coming towards the city, steadily advancing with every heart beat.

-Your Machine is wrong dude - said Isaac.

Mathias looked at her for the first time since the barrack. -My machines are never wrong. -

Sarah started shivering again, despite Isaac's magic keeping her sane. -Councliman Dawson said his allies were bringing more people into the city. - she offered. -Are those people? -

Emily took a deep breath. -Not just people, those are immortals. -

-Honestly guys - started Mathias. -It could be worse. -

The girl almost slapped him in his grinning face.

-Ah no Luz, before you burn me alive hear me out - he said. Her heart did a little dance when hearing him pronounce her stupid surname. Maybe he wasn't as scared of her as she thought despite Sarah becoming very pale at the mention of him burned alive. - They have no idea Dawson's plan has failed. They are only here because the need to alter the election and they need to be citizens for that to happen. Really, they cannot alter anyone's path because they have been here for too short of a time. -
