Once I returned to London
To deliver the news of Steve's death to Tony
I was shocked
Broken in a way

I lost two of my closest friends on the same day
Without knowing where the other one went
Tony disappeared without a trace

I couldn't say goodbye
And neither could Steve

And neither could Tony
I still don't know where he went

If he's hiding somewhere or if he somehow returned to his real life
Or woke up from his dream

In any case I hope he's okay
And that he's finally happy again
That he never finds out about Steve's death

The symbol of his strange watch is unknown
It always read 00.00 when they were around each other

They were too stupid
They never realized both their soulmates, each other, stood right in front of their noses for 2 years

But thanks to the soldiers and Steve the war was won
And we could all finally go home

Go home

Sometimes going home is a metaphor for
Someone to finally forget about the past events and finally rest

But can you ever rest?

The personnel of the SSR were packing up
I was sorting files when Colonel Phillips handed me two more

Separately

He walked off without a word
I opened the first one

It was Steve's file

Captain America
INACTIVE

It hurt to see it
It really did

I opened it
And inside was a picture of him
Of Steve Rogers

Not Captain America
But him

Pre-serum
With his dog tags on the outside of his t-shirt

I smiled
Knowing what he had done to save millions of lives

Not only during this time
But in the future as well
This is a time for us all to thrive again and live in peace

Forever

He never gave up a fight
A fight for freedom

Not only his own freedom
Everybody's freedom

He didn't only protect himself
He didn't become Captain America just to protect himself
He did it for everyone

Wether it was his intention or not
He did

I put down the file and opened the other one
They made a file for
Tony

It was blank
Free for me to fill in
I smiled warmly

There were pictures inside his file too
Three of them

One of them was him
Smiling brightly and looking into the camera

Two were polaroids
From those instant cameras he explained to me at one point

When he entrusted me with his deepest secret
He had a lot of things in his head, losing everything so abruptly took a visible toll on him. I didn't know if I was supposed to mourn him or hope he was in a better place..

The two polaroids were of Steve
One he was holding a child, smiling brightly
The other was of him looking away looking like a prince.

There were tiny remarks on the larger blank white space

"Love you, Cap"

And I remembered
None of them found out they loved each other

And I couldn't tell them either
Couldn't bring Steve back
Couldn't know where Tony went

It pained me
It pained me for years

Until the years when I could no longer work on my own
Until I needed assistance almost breathing

I never forgot about them
They were always there

In my heart

And in everything I did for 69 years
