Carnival

Did you hear?
The carnival is in town.

Nobody answers me.
Nobody notices me, anymore.
Doors slam shut like gunshots
Yells of a banshee fill the house

Dad, eating behind his mustache
Sits at the kitchen island
Newspaper spread open like tarots
Not once noticing me.

We used to play, run and fool
There was a time when he was still cool
Why did we stop?
Did we hit a roadblock?

Mom, stands in front of dad.
With her phone in hand
She scrolls through Facebook
Looking for memes and
Good night pictures.

Once there was a time
An actual time when she got me
She knew what I was talking about
I could talk to her about anything
I would make coffee
And we'd laugh for hours.
Where did we drift apart?
Was it something I said?
Was it maybe...

My sister, is up in her room
Door slammed tight
She's the banshee in the house.
We don't talk to each other anymore
I don't know why, though.
Maybe it's because
I'm better than her
Even though I'm her younger brother.

When I was little we used to play tag
With mom and dad.
We would get grassburns together
Bruise ourselves, but we enjoyed it.
Where are those happy days now?
Are they gone like mist?

Carnivals are bright and colourful
Not like my family who seemed to use bleach
Carnivals are fun,
it's a place where we can be kids again
Even if we are grown up teenagers and adults

Carnivals are sweet and you win prizes
Just like your family.
You never know what you'll get.

I woke up and realized
We should visit the carnival
Cause that's what family is all about.
