It's been a day since Julia disappeared

It's been a day filled with guilt, pain, regret

I chose to come to the hospital today to drown my sorrows in work

She didn't even take her ring or the car I bought her

I am currently on my table doing some paperwork

Buzz Buzz Buzz

The telephone began ringing

I let it ring for a while before picking it up reluctantly

"What is it Penelope?" I asked my secretary in a bored tone

"Doc, one inspector Bill just called the office airline asking of you"

"Why didn't the inspector just call me directly?"

"I don't know but should I connect the calls?"

"Yeah, sure, let's see what he's got to say"

"Okay, I'm connecting...."

"Hello, this is inspector Bill, am I onto Doctor Jacobs?"

"Good day inspector, this is Doctor Jacobs, what can I do for you?"

I asked that question not knowing that I was in for the biggest shock of my life

"We found a car that we identified as your wife's and I hate to be the bearer of such bad news but..." the inspector started making my heart beat increase

"And?" I asked shakily

"The car was involved in an accident but the driver is nowhere to be found"

I couldn't even utter a word, a million thoughts were running through my mind

I didn't know what to say or do

I think the inspector sensed this because he said...

"Doc, I didn't call because I want you to panick, your wife may not be dead, her body hasn't been found"

"Doc....Doc are you still there?"

"Ye...Yes, where did you find the car?"

"Right beside the River Nate, our first guess is that she could have gone into the river,do you know if your wife can swim?"

Now this inspector was beginning to annoy me

How could I not know if my wife could swim?

'He's unbelievable' I scoff internally

"Doc?" He brought me out of my thoughts of how unbelievable he is

"Of course, I know my wife can swim" I said in a 'duh' tone

"We searched the river thoroughly for signs of a body but found none so based on this information you just gave me, it is safe to think that she swam herself to safety"

Okay, now I'm mad

"So, you didn't find her? You're not sure she's safe? She could be dead for all you know" I almost yelled

"Doc, I told you,we searched the river thoroughly and we didn't find her, if she was drowned we would have found at least her body" he said, I wonder how he can still be so calm

"Shut the fuck up, tell me inspector, if your wife was involved in an accident and some fucked up inspector was telling you shit about how she could still be alive, would you be the least bit happy?" Now I was full on yelling

"I need you to calm down and focus on the bright side, she may not be dead" I really don't know how he can still be this calm

Well, I guess that's his job

"That is not what is called a fucking bright side, damn it" I yelled

"I want you to try to calm down for now,we would be needing your cooperation later, do have a good day"

He hung up

He fucking hung up

He's such an ass

Who gives such news over the phone?

Julia could be dead

I could have killed her

I could feel raw tears spring out of my eyes

I cried for the first time in a really long while

My door burst open and in came Gregory

I braced myself for the blame, he's surely gonna blame me

And he wouldn't be wrong, it's all my fault

"Greg" he didn't sound mad, maybe I'm imagining

"Greg, you need to calm down, Julia's fine" he said and I immediately felt my face lit up

"She called you?" I asked hopefully

"Not exactly" he hesitated "Julia isn't dead, I just know she isn't"

"Of course, she isn't, she can't be dead" I said quietly trying to convince myself more than I was assuring him

I saw everything become blurry

And then I blacked out
