PART 24 - SUNN MERE HUMSAFAR

The door clicked open and simultaneously both women looked towards it, withidentical expressions of hope writ large on their faces and in walked theperson they thought they had lost forever, DEV.

The minute Dev stepped in, one hand massaging his pounding head, he sensed the strained atmosphere in the house and his surprised gaze came to rest on Asha. Before his brain could process why Asha was still here so late in the night, he caught a flurry of movement from the corner of his eye and the next moment he was slammed backwards into the door when Sonakshi threw herself at him. Somewhere, an age-old reflex kicked in and he opened his arms just in time to catch her and then steady them both.

If Dev's expression was one of complete and utter shock at Sonakshi's behaviour, Asha's wide eyes and open mouth indicated that she was startled by the intensity of her daughter's reaction too. Before either could react, Sonakshi had pulled herself away from Dev slightly and then she ran her hands down his arms and chest, asking him all the while "Dev, tum theek ho na?? Kuch nahi hua na tumhe? Tumhe kahin chot nahi lagi na?? Bolo na, Dev, tum theek ho na??" The slightly hysterical tone in Sonakshi's voice was evident enough to Dev and he retained just enough presence of mind to stop himself from flinching away from her touch. 

Sonakshi's frantic gaze came to rest on Dev's stunned, uncomprehending eyes but in her panicked state, she was no longer in control of what she was saying and no longer fully cognizant of what she was doing. All she knew at this point was that her Dev was here, right here in front of her, in one piece, unhurt and all she could think of was that she could not bear it if anything happened to him, to them.

Her senses scattered by the mind-numbing terror of the past few hours, Sonakshi blurted out what was in her heart, "Main darr gayi thi Dev, bohot darr lag raha tha ki tum mujhe phir se chod ke chale jaaoge. Please, mujhe kabhi chodke mat jaana, Dev, main nahi reh sakti tumhare bina. Please kabhi mat jaana, Dev. I LOVE YOU. I NEED YOU". The words hung in the air, leaving Dev stunned and before he could process what she had said, Sonakshi hugged him with all her might, desperate to reassure herself that he was indeed in front of her.

Asha's eyes teared up seeing the way her daughter's arms were wound tight around Dev's waist, her head buried into his chest and then her gaze slowly travelled up to Dev's face and looked into questioning hazel eyes.

"Woh... woh news pe dikha rahe hain ki highway pe accident hua hai. Tumhari gaadi ... Sonakshi ko laga ki tumahri gaadi hai. Woh phone kar rahi thi tumhe par tumne utahya nahi tho, woh darr gayi ki tumhe kuch....", Asha managed to convey in a scrambled manner, trying to regain control of her own emotions after the stress of the past few hours.  

Dev remained silent and still, but his eyes moved to the TV screen where the news channel was still showing gory images of a car exactly like his own that was mangled beyond recognition. The poor soul who had been in the vehicle would not have survived the crash- that much was evident. Sonakshi's reaction made more sense now but still the sheer terror he had seen in her eyes was something Dev could not understand.  Neither could he understand the death grip she still had on him, or the fact that she had buried her face into his chest, her body pasted to his as if she could not bear even the most minute distance between them. He could feel her body trembling and it hurt him somewhere deep to see her like this.

"Soha?", he asked Asha, who promptly told him, "Woh so gai hai. Maine sula diya hai use.... Sonakshi ke room me", she said, and he nodded in acknowledgement. That was a relief, he did not have to worry about his daughter now. But Sonakshi??
