You were working in the garden, pulling carrots and potatoes out of the ground. It had been a couple of months since the Fellowship's departure, and your heart still ached. You did little things such as harvesting and housecleaning for a living these days.

Arwen lounged with you often. The two of you would talk and cry for the lives of your beloved soldiers. On one of the first days after the men left, Arwen tearfully confessed her love for Prince Legolas to you, and you let her cry on my shoulder. You were very close to one another.

You pulled another carrot out of the soil and tossed it into a basket. Suddenly, Arwen came running down the stairs to the garden, he dress a whirl around her. She had the largest of smiles on her face.

"Letters, (y/n)!" she cried happily and landed in the dirt next to you, not caring that she was getting her fine robes filthy. "We've been sent letters! There's one from Aragorn to you, and one from Legolas to me."

Eagerly, you took the letter she handed you and opened it.

Dear (y/n),

I've been thinking of you constantly ever since we left Rivendell. It is you that motivates me to rise every morning and continue this journey.

We are currently recovering from the tragic death of Gandalf the Grey in Lothlorien, under Lady Galadriel's wing. The wizard fell in the Mines of Moria after successfully defeating a Balrog. To kill one of these demons is something even the strongest of elven lords have failed to do. He saved our lives, and is hopefully safe and happy in the halls of the Valinor. He died a noble death, and for that we are all grateful.

Orcs have been a constant threat to us. They keep us from resting peacefully. I am beginning to just want to run to Mordor without stopping and throw the ring into the fire myself. Then I would be able to come back to you sooner.

The Fellowship is doing well. Most of us, at least. Boromir worries me. The ring has an effect on him, this I know. He is a good man, but evil can corrupt anyone it wishes to. The hobbits are fine. They are learning how to wield a sword. They have trouble keeping up with us, especially through rough weather, but their determination never ceases to amaze me. Legolas is mostly quiet. He, too, has a lady in Rivendell he longs to see. The Lady Arwen, if you did not know already, is very fond of him. I find it amusing to watch; some nights, he will speak into the starry sky like it is Arwen herself and speak of the day's events and how much he misses her. Elves can be mysterious in that way.

I hope you are content in Rivendell. Arwen seems to have found a friend in you. I'm glad I can rest knowing that you are not alone. As for myself, the only thing that plagues me is grief for Gandalf and my separation from you. I'm glad to have your necklace, it is like I have a piece of you with me as I march to Mordor.

Yours truly,

Aragorn

P.S. Please do not respond to this letter. By the time you have received it, I am no longer in the place I sent it from. I will write to you again as soon as I have the chance. Until then, hold this letter close to your heart and know that I am thinking  of you.

You sighed and placed the paper against your chest, both hands resting gently atop it.

As selfish as it sounded, the only person you really cared about in the letter was Aragorn himself. He was safe, and that alone was great news. He may not be happy, but he was unharmed. The hobbits, too, were safe. If that man, Boromir, tried to get to the ring, you knew Aragorn would not allow it. You had not known Gandalf, but you had heard of him. It was a shame he died, even if it was an honorable death.
