It would be an understatement to say the mountains were cold. They were freezing. And thanks to the merciless rain, the chill had touched your dwarven bones.

When you saw rocky giants fighting, you were given another reason to fear for your life. Many members of the company nearly died because of the slippery rocks.

As you all wedged your way through the mountains the Durins kept an close eye on you, particular Thorin, who kept a firm grip on your upper arm most of the times. If it wasn't he that held you, it was Kili.

You didn't exactly need a protector, even though you were in the mountains during a thunderstorm while suffering from hypothermia. But dwarven men were protective over their females, no matter how strong, because of how rare they were. There was nothing you could do to make them worry for you less.

As for Fili, the older of the princes, he seldom touched you. When he did it was tender and soft. Though the two of you normally lacked physical contact, you had caught him staring at you with awed eyes more than once.

Ever since your noble of a father had introduced you to the king's heirs, you had been interested in the golden haired prince. It was he that had invited you to join his uncle's company just months ago. He had seemed very hesitant when he proposed the idea, but you had immediately accepted the offer nevertheless. Anything to retrieve your homeland and serve the Durins.

It felt like hours before you reached a murky cave. There was no fire to light the area and keep warm by, so you lay curled up on the floor, wishing you could escape this misery through sleep.

Fili watched the dwarrowdam he knew was his One shiver as she tried to rest. As much as it pained him to watch, he wouldn't dare make a move. To warm you with his own heat would be far to bold of him. He had already given you all the layers he could spare and more, but the chill still got to you. Any physical touch to ensure your warmth would be inappropriate.

He had known the company would face hardships throughout this quest, but he had not considered that you might get hurt when he recruited you.  He just couldn't bare to leave you in the Blue Mountains while he couldn't watch over you to make sure you were safe. It was too late now that he realized that you would be better off there than here at this moment.

He had been so stupid, and his uncle made sure he knew it. Thorin knew that you and Fili were made for one another, and it angered him that his nephew had invited you, a female no less, on the quest. But you were so passionate and ready to serve Erebor that he had faith in your strength, and ceased to remove you from his company. Though, he still kept a sharp eye on you at all times and made sure the future mother of the heirs of Erebor was safe at all times.

As for the young Kili, he knew all too well of his brother's feelings for you, and even in the darkest of times, he teased him about it. Now was one of those times.

Kili sat next to Fili and gestured to the freezing woman only a few meters away from them. Fili did not appreciate his brother's playful attitude right now.

"Not now, Kili," the heir said with annoyance.

"I'm not doing anything inappropriate," Kili replied, clearly teasing. "I'm just trying to point out that your beloved lady is cold."

"She is a strong woman and can take care of herself. I'm sure she will warm herself up soon."

Kili grinned. "That she is. But how can you stand here idle when you know that you can make her more comfortable now? She definitely would warm up quicker if in your arms."

"It would hardly be proper," Fili said, knowing that his brother had a point but refusing to admit it.

"In terms of survival," Kili retorted, "It would be not only proper but necessary to maintain her homeostasis."

That was all it took for the elder prince to get up and move to to sit next to you. He gently rubbed your back to make you aware of his close proximity.

You woke from your restless sleep with a start. Once you saw who had awoken you, your cheeks fumed.

"Your majesty!" You whisper-shouted, careful not to disturb the rest of the company. "I'm sorry for lollygagging. Did you need something?"

Fili could tell that you were too weak to do anything as he gently pushed you back to the floor.

"You are so cold, my lass," he said tenderly. "Allow me to assist you."

He lay down beside you and wrapped his arms around your midsection as you wondered how the heat you had yearned for the past hours had suddenly gone to your face. His exhaled breath warmed the crook of your neck and you melted into his embrace. Warmth began to leak into your skin, and you felt your fatigue take over. Your eyelids slowly shut as you relished the sensation of Fili stroking your hair.

"See?" Kili whispered from across the cave to Fili. "Absolutely necessary."
