Chapter 17: Another Greenie

You spent hours working and studying your plan and theory. You asked Minho and Ben questions about the maze that night. Their answers either came out short, or they said "If you're not a runner, then you can't know."

You were thinking about becoming a runner. But, whenever you tried to discuss it with Newt or any of the keepers, they brought you down with rejections.

Once again, you had to show the new Greenie around today. You weren't to thrilled about it, but you knew you had to do your part; Rule number one.

The Greenie alarm came at noon. You immediately run to the box along with everyone else. "Hey, Y/N!" called Gally. "Have fun with the new Greenie!" he laughed. "And you better be nice." you laughed back. "Can't make any promises." Gally responded as you reached the box.

You heard the box halt to a stop, then the crate under it opened. The boy inside was covering his eyes with the bright light that hovered over his mop of brown hair. The gladers laughed at him while you looked at him in pity. "Go get him." one of the boys said. Then Gally jumped down into the box and said "Day one, Greenie. Rise and shine." he then pulled the Greenie out and threw him to the ground.

"Gall, what did I just say?" you yelled as the Greenie landed with a grunt. His brown eyes looked up at you then Newt. All of the boys were taunting him. Then the Greenie made a run for it. "We got a runner!" yelled Zart. 

You immediately run after the Greenie. "Go get him mama!" said one of the boys. You ignored the comment as you saw the Greenie face plant to the ground. You jumped on top of him, restraining him to keep him from running off.  You could hear the Gladers laughing and oohing in the back round. "Calm down, man!" you yelled, holding his arms down.

The boy relaxed a bit and you loosened his grip, helping him up. The poor boy looked traumatized. Gally and one of his builders came and drug him away to the pit. That was a new rule for any Gladers who had the "bright idea" to try anything,

"He's all yours." said the other builder. You rolled your eyes and scoffed. You saw Alby, who signaled you to follow him to the pit. The Greenie was looking around, looking scared out of his pants.

"Hey." said Alby. "Hey there, Green Bean." you say sweetly. "You're not gonna try to run again, okay? I'd hate to have to play tag with you again."

Alby opened the pit and jumped in, while you stayed by the gate. "My name is Alby. This is Y/N." Alby introduced. "Can you tell us something about yourself? Who you are? Anything?" you asked. The boy shook his head "No".
"What about your name?" Alby asked. "No." the boy replied. "I can't remember anything." he looked at the both of you. "Why can't I remember anything?"
"It's okay. Relax, okay? It's normal. It happened to all of us." you say. "Your name will come back  in a couple of days." said Alby. "It's the one thing they let us keep." 
"What is this place?" the boy asked. You and Alby exchanged looks. "Let us show you." you say taking your hand out for him to take, which he hesitantly took.

You, Alby, and the Greenie started to walk around the Glade. "We eat, sleep, grow our own food, and build our own shelter here. Whatever we need, the box provides." said Alby. "The box?" the Greenie asked. "Yeah, it's set up once a month with supplies and a new Greenie." you say. "This month that's you. It was me two months ago and I'm the only girl." 

"The only girl?" the boy asked in disbelief. "Why would they send you here? Who put us here?"
"That we don't know." said Alby. "We call them the creators, but no one has ever seen them or knows who they are. Or can't remember anyway." you say putting your hands in your pocket.

"You alright, guys?" you heard a familiar accent say. You turn around to see Newt limping toward you guys. Alby greeted him a with a chuckle and you gave him a hug. "Hello love." Newt said returning the hug. "Greenie, meet Newt." said Alby. "When I'm not around, he's in charge." "Well, it's a good thing your always here then." Newt smiled, putting an arm around you, trying to make it obvious that you two were together. You thought it was cute when you noticed what he was doing.

Newt turned to the Greenie "That was some dash you made earlier. For a moment there, I thought you had the chops to be a runner. That was until you face-planted and was overthrown by lovely Y/N, here."
You giggled at his sassy comment. "That was great." Newt laughed. "A runner?" the boy asked. "Newt, go find Chuck." said Alby. "It's okay. I'll do it!" you volunteered. "Alright." said Alby. You gave Newt a quick kiss and went to go find Chuck.

Chuck was helping Frypan clean the kitchen. "Hey Chucky!" you called. Chuck bounced, startled at the sound of your voice. You were like a mother to him the last few weeks. "Oh Y/N, you scared me." Chuck said out of breath. "Alby needs you. I think he needs you to help the Greenie with his hammock." 
"Okay!" Chuck said cheerfully, running towards homestead to get the supplies. 

Time skip!______________________

You decided to help Newt in the gardens for a bit until you saw a commotion in front of the maze doors. You ran up to see the Greenie yelling at Gally, who obviously did something to scare him or make him angry. 
"What the hell is wrong with you guys!"  the Greenie yelled. "Just calm down, all right?" said Newt. 

"No, okay? Why won't you tell me what's going on out there?" 
"We're trying to protect you, man. For your own good." said Alby. "You can't leave."
"-Why not?" the Greenie pushed on.

A faint click echoed 

"What the Hell was that?" the Greenie asked.

The doors had closed

"Next time, I'm gonna let you leave." said Gally, walking off.
"Gally." you said, trying to go after him before he trailed off.
