You woke up, your head pounding. You felt it and there was dried blood on the left corner of your forehead. "Hey, Greenie." you hear hear a voice with a familiar accent say. You turn your head to see the boy with sandy blonde hair looking at you.
"Who's Greenie?" You ask as you feel your forehead. "You are." says the boy. "No, I'm not. I'm Y/N." you say as you lightly scrape the dry blood off your head that was already bandaged.
"Oh, so you remember your name! That's surprising because most of the guys here take a couple days until they remember their name. But, I think that because your a girl, you remember a lot faster."
"What does being a girl have to do with anything?" you asked shooting the boy a lifted eyebrow. "Nothing. Nevermind. Name's Newt, by the way." He held his hand out towards you. you shake it.
"How's your head?" Newt asked. "Eh." you shrug. "Wasn't the first time. I hit it pretty good when coming out of that weird box thingy." you say. You then realized that you were a lot less scared then you were. Maybe it was because of Newt?
"Are you feeling well enough to be given the tour? Alby would have, but he's busy in the council Hall."
"-Who's Alby?" you asked. "He's the leader here. I'm the second in command."
"Oh." you replied. You got yourself up, a little bit too fast, which made you dizzy enough to slump back down. "You alright?" Newt asked. "Oh, just dandy!" you said sarcastically as you got yourself back up.
You exited what looked like a small shelter. "This is the Glade. It's our home and now it's your home too."
You took in your surroundings. It was a huge field with small shelters around it. "Now we just exited the med-jack hut. It's where gladers go to fix their injuries. There are only two med-jacks, Clint and Jeff. Clint is the keeper of med-jacks."
You nodded your head in understanding and he led the way. "Now you see, I'm a track-hoe. Our keeper is Zart. I may be second in command, but I still have a keeper too. Track-Hoes tend to gardens and grow vegetation for the gladers."
You walked passed the gardens. "Next we got the builders who make our shelters. They are working on a separate hut for you as we speak. They may be good with their hands but there's not a lot going on upstairs if you know what I mean."
"I heard that!" came a voice. That also sounded familiar. The boy with blonde hair and blue eyes came up. "Oh hey, Gally." said Newt casually. "I see the Greenie is awake." said Gally staring at you. "Yeah, I'm just giving her the tour and telling her the job options." said Newt. "Yeah, well good luck Greenie." said Gally.
"Who was that?" you asked. "That was Gally. He's the keeper of the builders."
"Yeah. I don't think I'd want to work with him." you say as you see Gally yell at a random glader.
"Trust me, i wouldn't either." Newt replied as he signaled you to follow him.
"Next we got brick-knicks who are similar to builders, but they do repairs to the structures instead." Newt said as you pass buy a group of guys who were talking with the other builders.
"We also have the cooks who make food for the gladers. Frypan is the keeper. We also have slicers who raise and slaughter livestock for the cooks. And we have baggers who are the guards and whenever needed, they take care of the dead bodies
"Why would you have dead bodies. You all seem safe here." you say as you look around, not noticing a huge gap in one of the walls.
Newt sighed. "Y/N, beyond this glade is a maze. We have map-makers who map the maze out while the runners go run and try to find a way out of here."
Your POV
Wait, what? Did he just say maze? Does that mean we are trapped? Are we being tested on like guinea pigs?
"Who are the runners?" I say casually, trying to hide my fear. "The runners go out everyday into the maze. Mapping it, memorizing it, trying to find a way out." Newt replied with a sigh.
"You still haven't found a way out?" I asked worriedly. "No." Newt simple replied. "How long have you been here?" I asked. "Three years." Newt looked down.
Oh my god! I'm probably gonna end up dying here!
"But, my big question is, how do people get killed in a maze? It's all just a bunch of twists and turns, right?" you asked anxiously.
"Not exactly." Newt replied. "At sunset, those walls close and if the runner don't make it. They're likely not to survive the night."
"-Why not?" I asked. "The maze changes at night. And there are these things called grievers that come out at night and crawl around looking for anyone trapped. But, that's not a good thing. They sting you and when they do, you go crazy and if you come back stung, you spend the day in the med-jack hut and at sunset, you are banished to belong in the maze and let the grievers finish you off."
Oh shit! I'm already dead!
"Sorry, if that was too dark for you, Greenie." Newt said snapping out of what seemed like a trance or as if he was having a flashback. "No! No, not at all."
"How about you work with me for today and you can choose your job tomorrow." said Newt as he held out his hand to me.
This was the third time he did that. Hmm...I wonder...
"Okay." I said simply as I took his hand.
