My car came to a stop. I climbed out. Ignoring the wind and the rain, I strode to a cliff's edge, looking down. The water was steely gray with rough whitecaps.
"Step back."
I smiled, tears of relief springing to her eyes. I turned to find Edward's apparition at my side. I stepped back from the cliff's edge, which caused him to disappear. That was it. I started pulling off my shoes and coat, adrenaline pumping.
Edward's apparition reappeared. "Stop this now, Alissa."
I looked at him. "You wouldn't stay with me either way." I kept going toward the cliff. With a running leap, I flung myself over the edge. I was screaming with exhilaration as I plummeted down into the water.
I splashed into the water. I popped back up. I laughed. "Yes!" I enjoyed a moment of elation and empowerment. But my smile faltered as a giant wave crashed over my head. I gasped for breath and was pushed back under the water.
I struggled under the water. I popped back up and looked around in a panic. Something orange-ish bobbed in the water. I went down into the water and came back up again. The orange-ish thing was suddenly thirty yards closer.
I struggled to stay afloat, but the wave smashed me into a rock. The air came out of my chest, and I sunk.
Edward appeared in front of me, his eyes full of longing and love. He reached to me, me to him, hands almost touching, things going dark. Suddenly, a hand grabbed my collar.
